Try some electrical contact cleaner - Radio Schlack stuff is pretty good. Be sure to get it into the shaft too and rotate the pot a while to clean the resistor by scrubbing it with the rubbing contact inside the pot itself.
Don't open the pot unless you REALLY know what you're doing!
It CAN be done, but I suggest a few more experiences like you just had first.
BTW: SOME pots are self-cleaning and you just rotate them a few dozen times and they clean out that same resistor material. It won't work on cheap pots or ones where the resistor material is worn away though.
