Lib of Congress and other Music archiving going on are using photographic methods to scan the grooves without a needle and then convert that to audio. They use photo over laser as it captures more information like that click is a defect in the wax.
After it's recovered as best it can, it can be played back through such plugins to give it the familiar sound it at at the time it was the only media and reproduction available. These processes also work for the old wax and tin that didn't have any electronic amplifiers.
