Solid state/class d vs tube amps

Shhhh dude who's busy making pot-boards.

Wait'll you see what they're going into, Mr. Rasta Pants.

Interested. Have a standard Combustion that could be a fun project (thinking of getting it de-fretted)...I have that newer Steinberger that's passive, and well you know.

Is there room in the cavity for this onboard preamp?

Well, I was not clear what you meant; which is why I asked you the question. You seemed to be asking about a tube driving the Class D section. But, perhaps, you were intending to indicate a Class D topology using tubes? Which, though theoretically possible, there are no commercial examples I am aware of. So, maybe, I’m just missing the contextual relevance. Sorry for wasting your time.;)
Not a waste of my time at all.
I'm only too glad to offer a clarification if someone asks.
And I like discussing this stuff with you BTW.

Contextual relevance? (I like that!)
Tube vs class D is not, in my opinion, a worthwhile discussion because one is comparing two unrelated things. Tube vs SS, however, is what I think was the real intent of the OP to discuss. That is a worthy discussion. Likewise I think Class AB vs Class D is also good food for thought. But those things weren't happening here, and I believe it was simply adding to the confusion. The OP kind of went in the right direction with his thread title, but others came along and started taking it to a place that doesn't really exist.

My point was to throw a wrench in the works for those who seem to automatically equate a topology, ie Tubes or SS to a class of operation. I have no more practical interest in a Tube based implementation of a class D amplifier than a NASCAR driver has in getting around the track using a whip and buggy. I just wanted people to stop and think about what they were really saying here.

If I missed the target with that, then I'm sorry.

Wow! What is it? 20KT88s? Jeez...OTL? For bass?
2 x 500 watt bass head. Four Hammond 1650 OTs in a separate case underneath. There's a dedicated TB thread on it where the builder jumped in, including posting schematics IIRC. He brought it to a GTG out here too.

You can't fool me. I've been around these parts long enough to misremember plenty about this unit. Besides I don't use a rolling cart to haul my bass on stage.

Also, one thousand toooob watts sounds like a good start. Let me know when you're in the ballpark of 2000 wRMS ~.02 or .03% THD...
