solid state "grind?"

Been playing other instruments for years and years, toured several times and whatnot, but I'm still pretty new to bass (just over a year). Having only used combo amps of my own, I guess I always just thought it was other people's settings, but I just gigged my big 200w amp for the first time and to my surprise, it GROWLS when you crank it up.

Maybe this is a dumb thing to think, but I thought amps breaking up at high volume was a tube thing??

Always been both SS and tube thing.

There are several self perpetuating myths revolving in this scene. Most have no base in reality, or were born about half a century go based on characteristics of technology of those times.

Several tube Vs. SS myths are good examples of this.

You also need to acknowledge that many of those people who keep parroting these myths, or make them up, do not actually even have the technical proficiency to discuss about such things. The same people who tell you this and that about amps tend to be the same people who ask about matching ohms, how basic features work, what differences are in class A vs. D and so on.

What next? My favourite perhaps; "Solid-state amps were not used by professional guitarists or on classic rock records?" Do people who invent these claims even think how ridiculopus they sound. Solid-state can't "grind"..... Sigh. Only a poor carpenter blames his tools.


Just think all the other nice solid-state amps you missed so far because a strong prejudice/bias was installed on you by these stupid myths.

The Ampeg Micro-VR I owned for a year and change was definitely capable of some nice SS overdrive! I think it was a MOSFET power section, so basically like one of those Fulltone Fulldrive/OCD pedals or the like. Obviously it didn't have the magical power tube saturation, but it still was in the same ballpark as the SVTs it was emulating
 
Making stuff that distorts is easy. Its making stuff that doesn't distort that is hard. Making stuff that doesn't distort using SS is easier than doing it with valves is about as far as SS vs valves determines how much stuff distorts. Most distortion pedals as SS.
So which is harder, making stuff distort in a way that sounds clean, but better because it's not sterile, with tubes or solid state?
 
The peavey I had sounded almost like I was running a fuzz, I found this on a gig with no FOH besides the vocals, the other guys kept telling me to turn up, it didn't blow the speaker or anything either... But the 400 is much more pleasant sounding grind, more controllable too!!
 
My class D amp (rumble 350) has a really pleasing mild distortion around half volume that is very responsive to touch, even without the overdrive engaged! My class AB amp (swr red face bass 350) has a much warmer grind to it, probably due to the tube preamp. A lot of it I think is settings but also how an amp reacts to your playing. I've never owned a full tube amp, but I attribute a conventional breakup more to tube amps, and a grind to SS. Its not healthy to generalize like that, but its my line of thought.
 
Most older SS amps sound awful when driven into distortion.
Just raspy and irritating.
However I wouldn't say SS can't distort in a good way.
I own a G-K 400RB. ;)

I had peavey's and Acoustics back in the day and thought the "amp being pushed too hard" thing sounded like crap
OTOH I recently bought an ancient 400RB and remembered that it can happen.

Ha! I just saw a guy gig an old Acoustic last night. It did sound like crap!

SS can sound great when the gain knob is used just right. Not too much but enough to give you some bite.
 
My simple listening experience with solid-state and tube amps was that I couldn't really detect a difference between the two at low gain(linear) levels, assuming similar bandwidth and group delay characteristics. With my electronics work many years ago in doing experiments on breadboarded circuits where I had scoped the outputs from these circuits I could see the departure from linearity when these circuits were overdriven. The solid state amp would clip, depart from linearity, with a sharper knee, equivalent to superposing a square wave onto the linear curve to a first approximation. The Fourier representation of this square wave is a series of odd harmonics that doesn't converge rapidly, meaning that the amplitudes of these odd frequencies diminish slowly. Thus the output of the overdriven solid state amp will be rich in high order odd harmonics, not musically consonant with the fundamental. The tube triodes that I scoped exhibited a softer knee at the point of departure from linearity. The type of Fourier approximation to this curve was more like a quadratic (even order) superposition that was composed of even harmonics, consonant with the fundamental.

Whether the even or odd harmonic generation by different types of amplification is a good or bad thing is, I think, a matter of personal taste. If I crank the gain on the ss preamp circuit and blend the output with a clean signal from my parallel tube circuit, I can generate some interesting results. I would say, in my experience, that I have to be more careful with overdriving my ss amp section as compared with my tube section. As somebody else mentioned, EQing out some of the high frequency odd harmonics from an overdriven ss amp might give an acceptable type of OD distortion. If I had a HF tweeter in my cab I would want to be especially careful about those HF odd order harmonics from an overdriven ss amp.
