solid state or tube?

I played through a variety of SS and hybrid heads and combos, with varying degrees of reliability, tone and volume issues. When my last one was stolen, I replaced it with an all-tube Ampeg SVT-II. It has all the tone and power I want and it's never given me a single problem in the 11+ years I've had it (changed the power tubes when I first bought it).

I personally prefer the hybrid amps that are both solid state and tube, since you can use either-or as well as blend the two to get different tones. I play alot of varied styles, so it's very helpful to have the option of switching between a clean, crisp solid state sound or getting nasty with the warmth and grittiness of a tube sound

Thanks AYB! I have to admit though for the record, on a lot of gigs I'll go 'hybrid' with rackmounted separates (tube pre and ss amp) cause of the weight. Just depends...tradeoff's in everything I guess

I recently traded my walkabout rig for a Traynor YBA1 BM2. I've yet to been able to turn it up past 1...I'm getting very anxious to hear what this puppy will sound like when it opens up.

But that's because there is an alternative: both!

I've having a new amp built that uses a valve pre and 1 watt valve power stage driving a dummy load that then goes to an ultra-clean solid state power amp, and BFM speakers.

The idea being that it's got all the tone of a valve amp going though a PA, without the weight issues of a full valve amp, but can alos do ultra-clean tone.

The guy who is building it is Dave Hall here in the UK (I have no association other than being a customer).

Definite best of both worlds.

I'm sure there are some great ss amps out there, but I really like the Traynor YBA200. Enough power, not too heavy, looks great. Cost was a very affordable $600 new. Sounds better with my active bass than my passive basses.

I'm one to be going along with dave on this one as well, must be an ACG user thing. Theres alot of intrest on basschat.

Spoke to Dave about some of his new concepts and got completely won over by his new design. I was very much after the best of both worlds tube tone in a lighter smaller box.

I've always been taken in by the valve tone but settled on hybrid to cut down on cost, size and weight. So I think this will be the answer Im looking for.

solid state for most Jazz and rehearsal, all tube for those rock gigs when I want to be old school.

I've found solid state( & HYBRID- as these have a S.S. power amp) seems to need to be turned up WAY louder than a all tube amp to get the same effect-on stage. & I like not having to be THAT "loud" but still be solid, punchy & clear. So it's ALL tube for me!!!!!
