some head sounds nice?>---->

So, last night we played this gig that turned into a bit of a free-for-all. Aside from our usual acoustic guitar/electric guitar/Zendrum/bass lineup, we had a pianist, another guitarist and a guy blowing harp through an amp.

I was, as usual, running my EBMM 5-strings through my Markbass CMD 121P combo. With my master volume just shy of 2 I still had a friend and fellow bassist tell me that when he stood back by the bar the bass was overpowering everything else. No, I was not running DI to the PA.

Markbass has several small combos, all with more or less the same head... 300w into 8ohms, 500w into 4ohms, and a killer EQ section with some proprietary filters that allow you to get either a modern hi-fi sound or a very old-school kind of warmth. They come in 1x12, 1x15 or 2x10. They're all within your price range, the heaviest of the lot is 44 lbs (mine is 29 lbs), and they'd all fit in a Prius. I keep telling myself I'm going to invest in the 15" 8ohm extension cabinet so I can extend my frequency response downward a bit and take advantage of all 500 watts... but then I wonder, what's the point? I've used that little combo in rooms that hold 250 people, and outdoors, and everywhere else you can think of, and I've never had the volume cranked even to the halfway point.

the point of the extension cab isn't so much volume but smoothness of tone. it really does make a difference for the better. however, i'd get the ny 121 with that combo instead of a 115. it's smaller and would be just as effective, if not more so.

since i already own a WT-550 i'm veeery satified with, I'd go wth the genz-benz shuttle 9.0 - nice tone, good features, small and lightweight.
regarding cabs eden's 210XST does it for me... perfect cab imo.

YA know... There isn't a single gig situation where an SVT, 810 and a Precision or a Jazz wouldn't fill the bill; except maybe a marching band in a phone booth...

The rig will do clean and quiet or loud and in your face. If you need to be louder than it can get, hook it to your PA. People who don't like the SVT did something wrong when they tried to use it.

TOO HEAVY? Get in a B3 band and have to lift one of those suckers up on a 5' high stage some time. You'll think you are lifting a Volkswagon.

Yeah, I know... the amp just seems to sound better when it's able to breathe all 500w whether I'm tapping the volume potential or not. And I was totally thinking that I'd go for the NY 121, until I got to GC with my combo and my basses and tried both the NY 121 and 151. The 121 sounded like more of the same (not a bad thing at all), but the 151 just seemed to add some roundness and heft without detracting from the punch of the 12 in the combo. They sound very nice together.

well i'm a more of the same type, but i could understand that. there is a certain authority that's missing from the 112. having two would gain a lot of it back, but i could see where you could be swayed by the 115 with it.
