Some pretty mismatched grain on a Lakland

Considering that manufacturers usually do clear finish on woods with good grain, I just wonder how are the other solid finished Skylines like under their coat.

I hate to be that guy about what might be a really exceptional bass but, fail. That's just really messed up. If it's gonna be a natural wood look, don't hit me over the head with weirdness.

it structurally "doesn't matter," but does look pretty bad. anyone making an instrument by hand thats taking any reasonable amount of pride in their work wouldn't have let that instrument leave the shop.

It might, though. Often, really dissimilar pieces like those will shrink differently and may make a very noticeable ridge at the joint, crack the finish, or they may even stress the joint enough to split it. It's just bad juju IMO.

If it plays well, has vibe & tone and doesn't weigh a ton, I'd be gigging that thing...if I wasn't such a Fender fan boy.

I think it looks fine. Probably a nice bass.

that's true. solid body instruments are pretty durable, so i don't see that and think "disaster waiting to happen," the way it would be if grain were mismatched that way on a violin family instrument / double bass. but, it definitely would be structurally better if it were matched better, so you're right.
