Someone cracked the Animato

Because it was important to know what an animato into an animato sounded like :D

Playing around with a bit of equipment this morning. I really need to get working on the next proto.

Just recorded using a mic so nothing fancy tone wise. Just the Animated blended with a Woolly Mammoth through my shiny new Sandberg in passive mode on the P pickup (I give that 3 weeks before paint starts coming off from wear!)

Ok so does anyone know if Adam Crowella is still making the Animato clone, the animated, I want one, wrote him an email and hope he responds, Im chasing some Muse tones and figure this is a good place to start.

Hope that was you that I sent the email to.

Sorry about the delays people. I bought a take away business at the start of the year to tide me over with employment and business experience while I finish uni. Now that the busy period is over, I'm working on a few other things. I'll get the animated pedals up and going soon but for now I need to focus on this business. Working 10-12 hour days every day does get a bit exhausting.

The good news is that in combination with the pedal sales and the business, I was able to buy a new space to work on pedals as well as some recording gear and even an oscilloscope so this should help with a few things, especially the Bitmap when I get around to breadboarding the second prototype. :)

Hi Adam!
First of all: thank you for your precious work!
I'm an italian bass player, and searching a long time for an Animato clone..
Finally, I've found you!
But I don't speak english very well, so I can't understand: the schematic Rev 1.10 is ok and full working? If I follow the indications in the pdf file I will obtain an Animato clone? The same that you use in your soundclips?

Thank you very much.

Hi Alessio, yes, the revision 1.10 is the schematic that properly works and is the one I used in my soundclips. If you do make it, watch the pinouts on the transistors and capactiors.

I'll be making some more soon, just have to work on a few things to make the builds quicker.

The NTE102/NTE103 are the same as the original. If you can find them in good condition and afford them, they would be the best.

Meanwhile, actually worked on the next prototype schematic. I should be able to build that within a week or two. Now from schematic to PCB... *sleeps*

and voila! here it is, my VERY messy build of the animato clone...i used the 1.10 schematic and made my own pcb. it sounds fantastic! i used 2n5087 and 2n5088 for the germaniums since i could not find them at a reasonable price. also 2n3904 for the c2240 since i messed up the pcb (base hole in the middle instead of collector in the middle) well figured that one out and changed all the trannies :-). works great. now to box it up...

Fantastic! I knew the 2240's would catch people out with the pinout. Glad to hear you enjoy the sound. I admit it can be a challenging PCB to make but congrats. :)

I'll try to have the next prototype done mid next week. Was hoping for tomorrow but I'm pulling 11 hour days to cover staff this week. The next PCB has been checked and includes some polarity protection and an attempt to use the momentary, soft touch foot switch to see how that feels and goes. *fingers crossed*. Worked on my bench tests.

EDIT: This is the level of complex. Production should have double sided boards. I actually need to work on finding a suitable supplier for potentiometers to PCB mount that'll be low enough to accomodate the top mount jacks, either that or I PCB mount the jacks too but I don't like that idea since they seem to damage the boards easily. I can't design the production boards unless I can secure (pun) the potentiometers.

ok. so i boxed it up. still works! i brought the trimpot to the outside, really like it to crank the gain there as well. it's just a different sound (trannies distorting...). i noticed one thing that i wanted to ask: the very high notes on the fretboard, starting at around a (14th fret) on the g string have something like a tremolo effect. the sound cuts out and in. not really completely out but it changes in timbre, or like feedback that comes and goes. hard to explain. also depending on the note i play the speed changes. so it seems to be like a modulated signal...oscillation i guess? but if i don't play i don't hear anything...has anybody experienced such a behaviour? or is there something wrong with my build? i kind of "like" the effect though :)
