A very good friend of mine passed away from cancer and his widow has asked me to put together a sound track for the memorial service (which I need to do today). Any general thoughts on appropriate songs would be appreciated. He was born in the mid sixties and was a very good guitar player, mostly liking 60s and 70s rock.

Our musical tastes overlapped a lot, but I was not as much into King Crimson or the Grateful Dead. Any specific song recommendations from these two would also be helpful.

Thanks and Happy Holidays.

A good friend of mine died suddenly a long long time ago. We used to run into each other at Dead shows all the time. We never actually went to the shows together, but several hundred miles from home, in a stadium full of thousands of people, I'd be coming out of the restroom, or navigating my way back to my seats with beer, and there would be Jabba. I bet that happened at least five times, and never in the city that we lived in.

Anyway, they played Ripple at his funeral, and I haven't heard that song one time since then without thinking of him. I have also worn a seat belt religiously since he died as well.

yeah, thats a good one.....emmy lou harris' spyboy version of "all my tears",or julie millers version from "broken things iirc

It's not easy to find, but if you can get a hold of Michael Manring's "Music for the Armchair Funambulist", it's an incredible instrumental piece. It's a very moving song, kind of a tearjerker every time I listen to it. And no kidding, I have actually considered having this song played at my funeral.
But it was an unreleased track that was only available for download through his web site, and I got it a few years ago. It might still be there, but I have no idea.
If I still have it, I will gladly upload it for you to take a listen.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. It is tricky, because his wife wants it to be casual and I think there will be enough tears without the tear jerkers. She told me "bring some Who and Zeppelin you know what he liked". However, it is not quite that easy. I think I have a decent song list going and thank you all for your suggestions. I will check out the ones I am not familiar with.

Colcifer, he was also a deadhead so I will check those out and include at least one. Thanks again.

All of the above suggestions have been added to the playlist (except the Manring one which does not appear to be on his website anymore though thanks Mikey for the offer) and thanks again to all for the help. American Beauty is now my latest album buy. Phalex, yet another amazing story of dead show magic.
