Songs With Great Funky Bass Playing!!!!

chic also has tony thompson on drums, robert sabino and raymond jones on keys, and sammy figueroa on percussion.


sister sledge is the 4 sledge sisters, katie, debbie, jim and joni. All the music and arrangements and lyrics are written by nile rodgers and bernard edwards. all the instrumentation is played by the band chic (nile, bernard, and the other guys i listed up there).

they have separate albums cause chic uses different singers for their albums. But, most of sister sledge's stuff sounds like a chic album. You will find that a lot of bands used chic to do their music and stuff for them in the late 70's early 80's cause they were dang good at it. Nile and Bernard went on to become uber-famous producers.

Finally someone that recognize's how funky life on mars is. What a great bassline.

Funny you mentioned Manu Dibango. I think "Hot chicken" is one of the funkiest songs of all time, with a nice juicy bassline. Just listened to it for a minute ago.

Steely Dan's Peg is always great, someone mentioned it earlier in this thread. Here's a live clip with Tom Barney on bass:


Look closely at Donald Fagen. I think he looks very much like a vampire at times... :D

Graham Central station: The Jam
Tower of Power in general (Rocco is one hell of a bassist)
James brown: Think, Out of Sight, Papas got a brand new bag, Licking Stick- okay anything james brown did.
Bela fleck and the flecktones: Blu Bop (not really funk, but a kick ass bass line) and sex in a pan (same deal)

And, like alot of guys above me have said. Wow. I'm just a young 16 year old, and haven't heard of half these bands. Luckily, I do have a record player, so I'll be hittin up some records soon.

Off topic- how about full albums with great funky basslines.
