Double Bass Sonusphere B-18 bass cabinet review

All I know is that my old AI Coda cabinet sits in its case all the time and I'm much happier with my sound. I still dig my Coda amp though!
I'm gonna go ahead and apologize for the thread derailment, as it sounds like you're happy with the product.

Curiosity lead me to look up the product on their website, which inadvertently lead to the discovery of their mudslinging at other brands. It might be a great product, with horrible marketing strategy.

Either way, my intention was just to look up specs, pricing, demos, etc.

How do you know that the cab is made of carbon fiber? The website says it's "advanced polymer", while their guitar website says their guitars are made from "carbon graphite". You're right about the price, though, it's currently on sale for $649 while the MSRP is $949.

From their FAQ page - this doesn't make me want to support this business because it's beyond crass, even if it's true, this doesn't make him look like a good guy:

Yes, you do see a driver vertically mounted on both styles of enclosure. But be fully aware that this is where any and all comparisons stop dead in their tracks. There are absolutely no sonic outcome similarities between the two. The Upshot is based on what engineers have repetitively determined is one of the worst common cabinet geometries for flat response (the tube). Tube geometry also results in virtually the same side-of-cabinet upper frequency shadow as a box. This is long-standing published textbook fact, not hype. No one has to blindly believe us… just do some basic research and reach your own conclusion. Conversely a sphere is universally considered vastly superior, as has been analyzed redundantly by sound engineers. Elsewhere on our website we have provided a cabinet geometry final response curve graph, re-printed from renowned engineering literature showing this. It is in part why Meyer Sound developed their relatively curved-face 2-D arrays. Bose implements a complimentary approach for similar reasons. Indeed, globe-shaped bookshelf hi if speakers, which work amazingly well, are another iteration. We cannot emphasize enough that the reason that the Upshot tube-style is not present elsewhere in either hi fi or live performance is because it is simply not capable of producing sophisticated, high-quality sound. Curiously, if AI actually believes that their standard down-firing woofer / front 'point source' upper frequency approach is so ideal, why proceed to offer an enclosure style that is in such opposition? Whereas AI products are otherwise relatively well thought out relative to the sonic outcome they provide, it is Sonusphere's educated position that AI made a quality control design mistake with the Upshot. Indeed, to achieve the same dispersion of sound with the same limited projection of frequencies as the Upshot, players would be better off setting a similar-sized speaker 'box' on it's back. At least the player would then retain the option of putting it back on its standard bottom for other purposes.

I stand corrected. I thought it was carbon fiber. My bad.

I have it on very good scientific authority that they totally mis-read or mis-applied the 'science'. A closer look at the scientific paper they base their 'criticism' on is referring specifically to a speaker which is 7/8 inch diameter and the cylinder is 24 inches in diameter. The paper is meant to describe the diffraction effects that affect tweeters on a baffle. When the speaker is nearly the same diameter as the cylinder, the result is not at all like what is shown in the paper, the frequency response does not vary widely.

So either they just don't understand what they are talking about or they are being intentionally misleading.

Personally, I don't care which it is. Their 'marketing' tactics of attempted character assassination of another vendor effectively removes them from any consideration in my book.
Yes. saying their cabinet design ensures a flat frequency curve (especially over the entire spectrum) is misleading imo.

Currently using the cabinet on a musical with a 13 piece band. Put it right next to my stool and I hear everything! As a bonus, the rest of the band can hear me clearly as well.

I took a look at the Sonuspheres on their website after one was up for sale in the TB classifieds last month.

The unpowered bass model uses a Kappalite 3010LF. Rated 42 Hz - 1.3 KHz and 92 dB. The powered PA model uses a Deltalite 2510. Rated 60 Hz - 4KHz and 97 dB.

I'm not a cab expert, so the following is all strictly opining on my part. In that small enclosure, you won't get a lot of lowest-frequency output from the bass model. Additionally, with the high end rolling off after 1 KHz, the cab would be articulate enough with the dispersion it claims, but there will be no real high end or sparkle. It could work well for upright bass where the lowest frequencies are not needed, for players who play a warm tone and don't care about the string noise and tonality. I could see it working for electric players who like a similar tone profile. But the sphere design is not going to create high frequencies when the driver can't produce them. The 3010LF is essentially a subwoofer that goes higher than most. It's fairly inefficient and so would have to have a fair amount of amp power.

The powered PA model would work better for upright because the frequency range of the Deltalite is well-suited for that application. Normally, upright players don't play that loudly, and so it'd probably match the limitations of the Deltalite. Also, it'd work well for an electric player who's doing low-volume rehearsal and gigs. A single Deltalite 2510 can only do so much before you hit xmax.

Technical observations only, I would definitely defer to any players out there who own them and can speak to the Sonuspheres' live performance capabilities.
 
A 1.3K rolloff seems pretty low to me, but the 4K rolloff of the powered version puts it right in line with most tweeter-less bass guitar cabinets.

My personal expeience is that the pickups I've used over the years (Underwood, BP100, Bass Max, Realist, Full Circle) don't have significant high frequency output anyway. The treble controls on preamps (both in amps and standalone boxes) are typically voiced around 5-10k and bring out nothing but hiss and finger squeak noises for me. I keep the tweeters on all my cabs turned off for the same reason.

I seem to recall that the old Fishman Model B 2-band bass preamps had the treble voiced for a 1K shelf and lot of guys set it for full cut :roflmao:
