I can read music albeit very slowly, and I often need to recite the notes and then play. When I was a child I used to be able to sight-read music (and had perfect pitch), but I grew tired of learning music (digital keyboard at the time) for some of my teenage time and ruined it all...
I play with my fingers and pick about equally and interchangeably, depending on what the music calls for. Lately I've been thinking that "the bass guitar should be only played with fingers" may be an American (Jamerson?) thing, as quite a few famous bassists from say Britain played mainly with a pick.
Whether only play root notes? I'd say this completely depends on the music. You can't play Motown or The Who with only root notes, but some music just sounds better with the bass guitar for root notes with maybe some other instruments for low melody (or no low melody at all).

Root notes with a pick can work (especially if doing early punk) with good rhythm,proper drive and timing

Peter Cetera was BADASS on the early Chicago albums, far from a root note bassist.
I was just referring to picking as he was a “converted” jazz guitarist. In my honest opinion, the band was a lot more solid rhythm wise after the departures of Cetera and Seraphine.
I could only listen to them a little bit at a time because there was no backbone or driving force in their rhythm section.
