As the overarching theme of this thread suggests, it largely depends upon the individuals involved. With the right people (and at the right time in one's life) it can be the adventure of a lifetime.
That's good to know. He seemed kind of annoying in that vid I talked about earlierI have met Fieldy twice. Both times he was gracious and very cool. A down to earth guy.
Actually, these days it seems like I'm begging soundmen to turn the bass DOWN! I play 50's-60's-70's music with my main band, and it's just plain not mixed like today's music, yet so many soundmen insist on it, especially younger ones.
+1 on this. It's a constant struggle when we do big shows. What happens is that there is so much low end you can't even tell what pitch the bass is playing. It's mostly problematic when the band is too close to the PA's subs.
+1 again. why is every club like this? its horrible and doesnt separate the band's sounds at all.

.
That, and why does the kick drum have to be louder than a sonic boom?
Some folks, usually younger ones, haven't yet figured out that kick and bass are generally not the lead instruments. That and "because they CAN"![]()
Bass level appropriate to the mix is gonna vary by genre.
And, by song even.
For me, once my level is set during soundcheck, I can control those dynamics myself...
Its funny...I seldom feel like I'm too loud out front.
My wife and I have a joke: If I can hear your music, you are in range...That is because the younger ones are the same idiots that drive around with the big subwoofers in their cars that you can here 3 blocks away.
Kick drum....isn't.....a lead instrument...?!?!?!?!?!
When did this happen? I -did not- get the memo on this.
This is gonna change my gig tonight.
Fieldy? Seriously?
I would take Fieldy out back by the dumpster and beat him with sock full of nickels.
