The root of the problem is laziness -- or narcissism. The clutter of this site could be greatly reduced if users would first check out the "search" function. Most of what is asked has been rehashed many times before. How many times does a post start: "I haven't had a chance to read all the posts BUT ...." Jeeze!

If everyone did that, there wouldn't be any new threads, and everything would just be in the archive. This would eliminate the social intercourse that keeps TB going. You guys get over it. The noobs can learn a lot from old farts. Besides, the OP's been here only three years. Wait 'til you've been here twelve.

I'm not jaded yet! There are a lot of threads I skip over because they're about something that doesn't interest me terribly, but I really enjoy it when I can learn something or see some arcane piece of gear I'd forgotten about.

I try to dispense a little experience-based knowledge from time to time. I like to think that maybe I've delayed a few people from seriously damaging their equipment.

Same, but the amps forum is usually frequented by the more technical sorts. The general bass player comes here once in a blue moon for help with a purchase decision, so it seems rehashed to the old heads. No pun intended.

When I want to know something on TB, I always try to do a search first--but that may be because, at the ripe old age of 36, I'm an "old n00b".

I do think that young people--not just "nowadays", but since the dawn of time--are more about instant gratification than a slow payoff. The youth do not see the benefit of doing their own research. And now, because of the good ol' Internet, one can just shout "GIVE ME IT!" and wait for someone to hand him the answers he seeks.

On a side note: I do have a small problem with the TB search function. I hate that it doesn't allow three letter words. In fact, I was just trying to find something about why my fuzz pedal is not getting "fuzzy" when its activated, but without the use of the word "not", I was having a heck of a time finding anything (I know, check the batteries! Did that already).

Although I am always hopeful that there will be something interesting and informative there seldom is.

I have a super low tolerance for the posts that are by people who don't have the ability to form their own opinion or make even simple decisions on their own.

Having said all that, could someone please tell me who makes the best guitar cord and what length I should buy?

Age may be a factor, but ignorance can come in many different forms. I'm only 19 and I haven't started any redundant threads (or at least not that I know of/remember). Perhaps it is the culture, but don't blame it on age. Not to mention, I'm going to have to deal with these people the rest of my life.

people ask the same questions over and over again because the enjoy the social aspect of having someone reply to them personally, whereas the search function doesn't feel as much like you are getting to participate in the community. if you look at my profile, you will see that i hardly post at all (read: i use the search function often)-- that does not mean that i don't wish i had been around when some of these topics were being discussed for the very first time... besides, maybe someone with something new to say about an old topic would be more likely to reply to a fresh thread than resurrect an ancient one. just sayin...

I'm a relative newcomer to both bass (it's a hobby) and TB, and I can't count how many times I've left this site forever...then, an interesting topic with mature, well thought out responses temporarily mends things for me again. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for being immature and having a good time (especially at someone else's expense).

I know it's a public forum and everyone is entitled to their opinions - however, after reading some of those opinions, I wish that they had kept them to themselves.

The bickering on TB is second to none, and it's astonishing when you read the profile of some of the folks slinging mud around here. Seemingly accomplished musicians with "endorsements" should be better representatives for themselves, their musical prowess as well as whatever they've been chosen to endorse.

To be honest, I always thought that bassists were the strong, silent type - the kind of person who sits back and barely notices the world crumbling around them while moving mountains of air. I'm guessing that for whatever reason, modern bassists (at least the majority on TB) have morphed into an overly sensitive mutation of the bassists that I grew up listening to and admiring.

If that offended you, then you may be too sensitive to be a bassist.

Although some of the subjective stuff (What should I buy?? Whaddya like??) gets a little old, it doesn't really bother me. I just skip over the stuff I don't want to bother with.

Like Bassbeard said, I think a lot of people want to jump in for the social aspect and don't really know what to post. They think up a lame question just to join in. I'm sure they don't mean to make that blood vessel in your forehead pop out.

It's a lot better than having a forum where there's no posts at all. At least here there's SOMETHING to read every 15 minutes.
