it is attached to a HUB, is it just displaying that its using MIDI for the external control? it makes it a little difficult to know what the gate setting is

It must be the hub, because I've never seen the LED on my pedal turn red—only green.

My guitar player and I got a really cool sound with the Metal setting the other night at his place. We play Shoegaze/Dream Pop, and—ironically—the heavily saturated tone of the Metal setting sits perfectly in the mix. We had the Drive pegged, the Mix at noon, the Bass and Treble at noon, and the Mids dialed back to about 9:30 or 10:00. I may have to tweak the settings a bit when I try it with my amp cranked at full volume, but as far as I can tell, this one's going to be a keeper.

Your best bet would be:

* Gated Fuzz
* Either the gain very low to where it just allows the instrument to traverse the gate threshold
* Or the gain way up, but your instrument volume way down, again just until it just traverses the gate threshold

You can also experiment with the Noise Gate added.

I wouldn't expect it to sound exactly like the Mammoth, the OFD Gated Fuzz isn't extremely sputtery / raw / velcro sounding. But it should give you an approximation of the general heavily gated fuzz effect where it's just passing the gate.

Trick is to play just past the gate threshold.

Alright, as regards the Wooly Mammoth thing: I have a Mastotron (basically the same as a Mammoth, but with an input impedance control - some say it sounds the same, some folks say it doesn't... me, I think it's 95% the same). I could get most of the sounds of the Mastotron, at least tones that I personally dig, from the Gated Fuzz on the OFD. It took some doing though. Low gate setting, more treble boost than you would expect & higher gain settings and turning my P Bass down a tad. It gets the velcro thing going and a little bit of the glitchiness.

It's close enough to make me leave the Mastotron off my board, but not enough for me to sell it off.

I got pretty darn close to that clip with:
Gated Fuzz
Low Gate
P Bass volume 80% tone 100% open
Mix 1:00
Gain 3:30
Treble 2:30
Mid 11:00
Bass 2:30

Got it this morning. I got a nice subtle 'always on' type of grit using tube drive at low gain and blended with my clean signal. Sounds really good in a recording mix.

I still have yet to get anywhere close to a Mammoth sound. Most of the fuzzes tend to sound very simlar and the sound I am hearing aside from the Mammoth tone, I cannot get close too. Some random settings tend to sound pretty god in a drum mix, but really where I am looking to go. Hopefully with time I can figure something out. I have gone through quite a bit today alone, maybe I need to step away for a while and come back tomorrow!!

I played some more with the rat sound. I'm trying to find not-too-over-the-top but distinctly tubey. Sort of like this:

By the way, that's the bass I've bumped up as the dial indicates. The others are at noon.

Whatcha think? Got another distortion on the dial to suggest I try?

Are most of you keeping your EQ on the OFD flat with a little boost here and there? I seem to want to always max the treble, noon the mid and keep the bass around where it says boost or a little past. You y'all that have used it extensively now think I'm over EQ'ing the EQ?

Not sure what your amp is or how you run it normaly, but I can't imagine running my treble much past 2 o'clock.

Yeah, I find myself cutting treble more often than not (just slightly). The mids have the most influence over the dirt, so I adjust that band the widest- sometimes scooping it out, sometimes boosting. I don't think I've cut any bass yet, usually adding a little extra if I don't use as much clean blend.

gregmon79, what basses and amps are you generally using & how are they set?

gregmon may also note that I DID get my output up near 3'oclock today. Only when using the milder od's and with the gain all the way down though. Most of my presets I have the output at around noon & that gives me just a little bump above 'unity' volume.

This is about how I do it too. Depending on the drive type I cut he highs and boost lows and mids. Great pedal!
