Source Audio OFD

OK Roger heres what I found:

The OFD bypassed, and just a cable striaght to interface both sound the same. No issue there.

The OFD set to Tube Drive, Drive at minimum, Mix at 100% clean, bass at full volume comes back with very very slight clipping. If going through an amp I probably wouldn't hear it, but with the headphones on I can definitely tell the difference. However, if I roll back the volume, clipping goes away and it sounds the same as bypassed, although with less volume obviously.

2nd note: With the same settings mentioned, even with mix on 100% clean, when I turn up the Drive from minimum to higher, there is a volume increase as well.

Here are the clips, appropriately named. I didnt get the last bit about the volume increase because it was clipping my interface and sounds utterly horrible. I dont want to subject you or your speakers to that torture. I was monitoring my gain at all stages as to be sure the preamp/nterface wasn't clipping at any point in these clips.

Ah. That does help. We also were using an amp, and not headphones.

Just so you all know, we do 100% of our product development work with amps. Never headphones. We will need to think about whether that is sufficient given that many of you use headphones.

I go about 95% of the time without any amp. DT770's at home for practice/recording while the family sleeps. Our church uses IEMs and I'm standing right above a sub under our stage, so no amp needed. I'll use an amp when playing out, and sometimes at home when I feel the need to rattle the house.

I found over the years that using headphones brings out the nuances in my playing and forces me to clean up my sloppiness. Plus it doesn't bother anyone in the house or the neighbors.
 
What's the use of playing bass if you don't annoy your neighbors!

This is all good stuff. I'm always playing though amps or at home I use a small powered PA monitor to get full range at low volumes. Sometimes when I'm learning songs I'll use over the ears for my bass with earbuds for the songs I'm learning on my iPhone or iPad. Stacked. Keeps it down while keeping it fat

I just checked with Bob, the chief scientist here at Source Audio. He is the "architect" of our effects processing algorithms. He gave me some interesting information about the OFD, which I have included below.

When you select an effect and engage it, and roll the drive knob all the way down to zero, the effect is not fully bypassed. This is actually intentional! The OFD is simulating that circuit type with the drive set to zero, and is it turns out, this is not completely transparent in the real world.

As a simple example to illustrate why this is the case, let's talk about the tube drive effect.

Tube Drive emulates a tube preamp circuit. In reality, vacuum tubes are not at all linear, even when they are not really being pushed into overdrive. They have a characteristic transfer function (effectively, this is the relationship between the output level and the input level) even when they are not pushed into saturation. The OFD's Tube Drive effect was created by measuring this transfer function on a vacuum tube and then applying it to the signal when the effect is engaged - the drive knob simply allows you to push the signal further up the curve in the transfer function. So in fact, you will notice that your bass signal is going to exhibit signs of very mild saturation even with the drive knob set to zero. As the drive knob is turned up, you'll then hear the more pronounced overdrive sounds more commonly associated with a driven tube preamp.

The transfer functions on the OFD are not only nonlinear but also frequency-dependent, like what you'll see in the real world equivalent circuits. This means that the relationship between output and input signal levels depends on their frequency, and the overall result is that different overdrive/distortion types have different characteristic frequency coloration (note that this is independent from the three-band EQ we give you on the OFD - it's an "always-on" coloration of the signal). This matches, in fact, what you'd see with a traditional tube or transistor preamp (or any type of distortion pedal).

Lastly, the user EQ (bass/mid/treble) and the noise gate are active when the effect is engaged, so those might change your tone subtly as well. You can "zero" the EQ by holding down the TONE SHAPE knob until its LED blinks a few times.

So, the good news is that your experimental results match exactly what was intended by the designer! Even with no drive, the OFD will impart a characteristic transfer function (mild saturation, typically) and frequency coloration associated with the chosen effect. The OFD was designed this way because this is what real-world circuits actually do.

Thanks Brett for looking into that and providing us detailed info!

I was under the assumption of pretty much everything you wrote, that even with drive set to zero it would still be a colored signal. My only concern was mainly referring to the Mix function. When it is set to 100% clean it was still colored as if some 'OFD' was getting through the clean signal, regardless of drive. I still am not sure if it's the dirt getting through, the input level of the pedal being clipped by a high output bass, or some combination of both? That was the real reason for my test, the other stuff was more to confirm what was already said, or discussed before I jumped in.

Again, I say thank you for all the insight. All the inquiries I've had with SA have been nothing less than great.

Sorry that I misunderstood the question initially. I think I get it now.

I checked with Bob, and there should be no EQ applied to the clean signal, so you should get exactly the same sound from your bass when the pedal is bypassed and when it engaged with a 100% clean mix. Note that the OUTPUT knob is active when the effect is engaged, and a perfect unity (0 dB) gain isn't quite at the 12 o'clock mark on the knob. In my case, it was a little bit beyond 12, closer to 1 o'clock. It took some messing around, but in the end, I was able to get the pedal sounding exactly the same with it engaged in 100% clean mode and with it bypassed.

I made a quick YouTube video so you can let your ears decide! I didn't have a bass handy (it was in use) so I just grabbed a guitar instead, but I think this should still be a sufficient demo. Let me know if this helps.



The audio was encoded at 192 kbps so it should be of sufficient quality to hear exactly what's going on. My playing wasn't entirely consistent because I had the pedal sitting on my desk - I had to reach over with my hand every few seconds between phrases to hit the bypass switch!

It's possible that you're getting a little bit of coloration/distortion because the output knob isn't quite where it needs to be, or possibly your bass is a bit too hot for the pedal's input and you're overdriving it a bit. There's also the possibility (and I'm not ruling this out!) that the mix knob on your pedal isn't quite getting the full range, which is why you can't seem to get a 100% clean signal. In that case, we could repair the pedal for you, of course!

Too bad, it's one of the nicest (dare I say best) effects gear place in Montreal. And, it is right across the street from the best smoked meat in Montreal.

It's the last two suggestions that I narrowed it down to. I do believe it's the bass being too hot, since dropping the volume on the bass fixes the clipping I hear. This could be a concern since my bass isn't necessarily considered hot compared to what's out there.
