I almost always have the OFD on when I play at church. It's really a super super subtle drive. Most people probably wouldnt be able to tell but I find it sweetens the notes as you climb, and growls them as you drop.

That sounds good. I've been sceptical of how the OFD might work for me (low gain) on the basis of demos found so far, but that is definitely in the zone. Could you give us an idea of the settings for that sound ?

Oh and what bass are you using ? Couldn't make it out in the vid.

i think the ofd is good at everything. the two different types of blend give lots of tweakability. low gain sounds are not a problem. deciding for one type of low gain sound might be more difficult.

I've heard several low gain demos of the OFD and most of them I dislike for being way too fizzy and nowhere near enough growly. Might suit other peoples needs but not mine.

OTOH I think I can hear the sound I want in the video above.

The bass is a Streamer LX, same one in my avatar.

At this point I am guessing with the settings, but it should be pretty close:
Tube Drive setting, gain at minimum or close to it, no noise gate, volume at unity, clean blend is really at a specific point where it is balanced both ways and not too much of the dirt comes through, somewhere in the 9-9:30 area, I dont recall what I did to the EQ, most likely some mid and low cut since the clean takes care of it.

Nice! How does the blx line stand up to the neo line? I own a 212 and 410 neos and I saw a good price on a back line cab in the classifieds. Are they the same thing? (I know, I know, GK thread, sorry)

Meh. It's nowhere near as good as the neo 212. But this cab is for practice...and occasionally topping the neo. Got it used for $130, can't complain.

I have read this entire thread. I own a VMT deluxe and have been fairly pleased so far. I am planning on buying a Brimstone XD-2 when they come out and a Tall Font Russian. Are you guys telling me that I can cop those two with the OFD?

Probably not all the tones from a TFR.

I'm having a bit of a problem.

I'm looking for a low gain overdrive that plays more in the highs than in the mids. More like the fizzly tone of the VT bass when the character knob is at 1 o'clock. Or something like the B3K.
However, this seems to be not possible. The pedal reacts strange when gain set to minimum, just as if it wasn't designed to do this. I have to add, that I put blend at noon (all wet) because of my 2 amp setup.
Moreover, when setting the blend in either of the directions (3 or 9 o'clock) and the gain at minimum, there's literally up to no difference between the different sounds.

My problem is that the Stingray with an overdrive always sounds more like R_R_R_R_R, you can almost hear a very fast tremolo... compared to this a Jazz Bass or a Precision, which are more like RRRRRRRRR. Does anyone know what I mean?

There really isn't a good 'transparent' drive other than using lots of clean blend to bring back the clarity of the high end.

My low gain setting doesn't necessarily sound perfect by any means by itself, but in the mix is super growly and warm.

Ha! Transparent. That's the word I was obviously looking for.
This is bad... I mean, I have two signals amplified differently with each a cab. One stays always clean and one has the OFD. Wouldn't make much sense dialling in clean sound on the device.

So, Brett and I just did some listening.
Effect knob set to Tube Drive
Drive set to zero
We then listened to full wet signal and full dry signal. They sound exactly the same. The wet signal sounds just like the clean signal.

One other point. Lets say I am comparing:
1) A straight wire
2) The OFD with the effect engaged

1 and 2 might sound the same, but they could also sound different because the OFD (like any effect out of bypass) has a buffer. The buffer will impact the level coming out of the bass, particularly with passive pickups.

I always thought it maybe was due to higher gain basses maybe clipping the pedal slightly, and maybe lower gain basses sound fine. I may be wrong but I am writing it down to look at later once I have a few minutes to check it out.

Edit: I'll even throw in some sound clips so you guys can hear what I'm hearing!

That is a good point. We will do more testing on Monday. If you back off a bit on the vol on the bass, does that change things?

And just to be clear, you are testing just as I described above and below?

hmmm. I don't get any strange artifacts/coloration using the the OFD with my stingray (or any of my other basses for that matter) unless I want it to.
I find it more than capable when used as a subtle overdrive, and all they way up to heavy fuzz/distortion.
