Going off memory as I don't have the OFD in front of me, but I don't believe the EQ affects the clean blend at all. It only applies to the drive effect.

However, you could probably pick a somewhat neutral drive effect, set the gain to minimum, then EQ to taste for an EQ-ish effect.

Exactly. With the gain all the way down and output set to compensate, I think it will work.

-You can choose any pedal model (doesn't matter).
-Set Mix fully counter-clockwise so all you hear is your unaffected bass. The gates and eq are moot when fully counter-clockwise.
-Experiment to find 'unity' volume with the Output knob & mark or remember this setting. The Gain knob will still effect the output volume slightly even though the clean blend is maxed, it just doesn't distort.
-Plug in Expression Pedal and select EXP with red led.
-Press & hold Noise Gate button until top red led (EXP) starts blinking slowly.
-Rotate Output knob to lowest pedal position wanted (silent for me).
-Press Noise Gate once, led should blink more rapidly.
-Rotate Output knob to highest volume setting you want (at that unity point you noted earlier or higher or lower if you want).
-Press Noise Gate once more.

You know have a volume pedal!

The expression pedal eq trick does work, but you have to dial gain all the down and the Tube Drive model sounded cleanest (but not entirely clean).

I set it up as a bass boost that I can sneak in with the expression pedal. Good for "special effect' glissandos or beefing up a tweedily upper-register lick.

Hi there,

I have just enough for 1 pedal.....can´t decide, no stores around with pedals to try out (live in Panama, C.A.), I´m inclined to the OFD...but then I saw (heard) the SolidgoldFx Beta Bass OD.

Can you get a similar sound of the SGFx with the Source Audio OFD? Really loving the low gain (yet round and low end roundness of the Beta)...but then again I very much like diversity.

For me, yes. I replaced my oxide with the OFD. I've heard others say they're less satisfied. The OFD doesn't really replicate other gated fuzz tones, it has it's own unique tone kind of baked in.

The ofd doesn't mimic that starved or pinched fuzz. I've tried. But the gated fuzz and octave fuzz are incredibly BALANCED usable tones. If you set the gate on high on the gated fuzz though, it'll come semi close when allowing notes to sustain but it's still not quite the same. If I could only buy one pedal though it would be between ofd and manta. You can get some good distortions without a follower though on the manta plus the filters are incredible.

IMO that speaks volumes about the Source Audio team. They've stepped up the stomp box game incredibly and most of the competition better figure out how to catch up, again IMO.

I dig the gated fuzz on the OFD but it's definitely it's own unique flavor, even though that's what they cite as their reference in the manual. SA has done INCREDIBLE things with making digital sound analog (or better said: sound good), but gated fuzz is a tough thing to replicate. I've never heard a modeler of any kind (or price) come that close. FWIW, the only other fuzzes I've kept on my board are the gated variety, I can use the OFD for everything else.

Well, what are you really looking for? I've seen the Beta described by most as an "always on" pedal. For me, I've got the VT Bass and the B7K doing shifts in that department. I wouldn't want my OFD dedicated to that purpose because it does way too much to limit it.

Either way if you're looking an always on pedal or you are just seeking the "missing piece" which is a lower gain / vintage sounding OD - then maybe the Beta is for you. If you're looking for versatility and expandability, the OFD is the best bang for the buck on the market. That said, the OFD can probably achieve something very close to the Beta sounds I've heard recorded, particularly by utilizing the 3-band EQ. I'd probably start with Smooth Tube or Tube Drive on the OFD. I think any bassists who likes dirt should have an OFD on their board. It does what it does so well and for the price bet and new, it's pretty hard to pass up IMO. This pedal is great! I sold my manta but only up get another SA pedal, the PEQ. I'm happy. And the OFD is just too good of a dirt to not have in my arsenal.

Thanks for your reply....as for "What I really want? Beta vs OFD?, the honest answer will be both. But as I mentioned, I´ve only enough for 1 box right now. From what´ve read from this thread and the demos (thanks for pointing out that great example!!!) I think the OFD will cover my inmediate sound needs.....
