This is interesting...did this cause any problems for you when you were testing? Is there a possibility that enabling an effect on the M5 would also turn on one of the SA pedals?

I ended up setting all of my M5 patches to a bypassed volume pedal, that didn't seem to cause any problems. There's definitely the potential for the M5 to screw up your SB2 pedal settings though I cannot comment on any specifics at this time. You'd have to bust out the MIDI CC listing for both the M5 and the SB2 pedals to see where conflicts might exist.

Smallequestrian, I asked for the reason stated in my post. I assumed that if the instructions in the manual were incorrect someone would have had the same issue I had, and it would have come up here or been reported to SA before. If that doesn't make sense to you, fair enough.

<Inexperienced user warning>
A few (possibly silly) questions about the Hub please!

1) Am I right in thinking that 'scene saving' is the ability to store the current settings of a SB2 pedal while the Hub is limited to control only on/off settings and (for the Pro series pedals) preset recall only on Pro or SB1 pedals? Or can it do more with the non-SB2 pedals?

2) in this regard, can the Hub be used to control other brands of pedals which have MIDI input (say, a Whammy)?

3) My understanding is that the Hub has nothing to do with the 2 storable presets within each SB2 pedal? So, let's consider this scenario.... You have a song that is verse-chorus-verse-chorus. You start the song with no effects. At the chorus you want to kick in, for the purposes of this question, a fuzz from the OFD and then switch it off when the song reverts to the verse. If I recall the 'scene' with fuzz prior to the song, surely the MIDI controller will have to turn the OFD on? Which I don't want til the chorus? And then, if I turn the fuzz off for the second verse, when I hit the OFD footswitch again for the second chorus, the pedal will give me the preset stored on that footswitch and not the fuzz scene I want that was saved by the Hub? If I've understood correctly? Which I assume I haven't! What am I missing?

4) All the videos I've seem show the MIDI controller (MIDI Mouse) needing at least two footswitch presses to activate an effect (scroll to preset then activate). How easy is it to use these controllers to go from patch to patch and back again within a song? Once scenes are set on the Hub, is there any need to be using the foot switches on the SB2 pedals to change sounds or can everything be accomplished directly from the MIDI controller footswitch?

Can't help you on the Midi Hub (just lurking here ATM) but the midi mouse has two modes of operations. I can't remember what the manual calls them but you've seen what I would call the 'preset' mode. In the other mode as soon as you hit 'up' or 'down' it sends out the Program Change message immediately.

FWIW, I'm not a fan of either mode for switching on an effect mid-song. I had it backfire on me once (using a Bass Pod XT) ... don't know what I did, maybe I didn't hit the button, maybe I hit it twice, but I finished up on the wrong patch and it took a few seconds of fumbling and reading the numerals on the pedal to get me back to where I wanted.

Looking forward to the answers to your other questions ... I'd like to think there was a way of hitting the button on the effect (only two choices, on/off, not 128 different patches) to turn the effect (chosen in the 'scene') on or off ... and, as you say, doing that repeatedly for verse/chorus transitions.

OK, I will soon have a setup that can benefit from a Hub.

If I get a Hub, can I use it to save/recall scenes without an external source of program change messages? Even if it's inefficient, it would be nice to be able to do this with buttons on the unit.

I can't really afford the Hub and a Gecko all at once, so I was hoping to buy and learn one piece at a time. Is this possible?

Without an additional controller like a Gecko or Mouse, the HUB will only recall 1 scene.

If the hub had that functionality built in, then it'd be more expensive and there wouldn't be a need for the controller anyway.

FYI, the controller is pretty sturdy, It's far down on my list of potential failure points with my setup and I can always carry a second midi cable.

Well, at least if your midi switching goes down, the pedals themselves keep working fine as well as their respective 2 presets each.

Power supplies, instruments, cables, building power, etc can all go down. The hub or Gecko don't seem any more likely to fail than any of those things.

At the same time, I'd LOVE to have an all-in-one HUB + Midi pc changer and Expression pedal! Wouldn't have to be much bigger than a wah pedal with a little led screen...

YES!!! And although it would cost more than the current Hub, it might not cost more than the Hub + Gecko combo..., and it might have more functionality.... Named presets, multiple sets of presets, etc... It might.
