Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

@Nathan Navarro
MIDI Designer (on iPad) --> Zivix PUC and the Beat Buddy are merged into a MIDI Solutions Quadra Thru before being sent to the rest of the chain is my usual setup. But in the post I made from the other day I had gone Beat Buddy straight into the Hub, nothing else MIDI in the chain, and still saw the scene-jumping behavior (I had to create test scenes in the Hub prior to switching the MIDI routing though).

To be clear, you're merging the Zivix PUC and the BeatBuddy with a device and then going into the MS Quadra Thru, or did you mean to say that you're merging the Zivix PUC and the BeatBuddy with a MS Quadra Merge? Not that it necessarily matters, given your results when using solely the BeatBuddy and the HUB. Just checking. Thanks!

Sorry, I actually meant the Quadra Merge, although I actually use and have both. PUC and BB merged by the Quadra Merge, then to the Quadra Thru, then out to various devices.

Sorry to keep picking this scab, but it would be nice for SA to advise some commitment to release the Reflex USB editor. Not asking for instant gratification here, and totally expect that SA will be consistent as with previous releases of similar features (ie. Hub manager software was released several months after the Hub release). However, based on the responses from SA so far, it seems like there is little to no commitment to do this, if I am interpreting the “low priority” comments correctly.

I think everyone that participates in the SASS forum is a huge fan of SA and we genuinely appreciate how open SA is with all things Source Audio including product release plans which is largely unmatched in the industry. I don´t think SA is going to lose many sales if features such as the USB Editor take some time be released, however, I think some, including myself, purchase these products with the promise that this feature will eventually be available. To be advised that these features have little to no priority is a bit disappointing.
I hear you. It is a very valid point. Before I commit to anything that is wrong, can I wait a bit to see how thing develop with our workload and with the sales? Making a clear and solid commitment at this moment seems to be irresponsible.

Thanks again for all of your support!

As I think more about the Reflex question it might be best to make no mention of the editor in our marketing and manual from this point forward, and then offer a full refund to anyone who purchased the product prior to today expecting that this software would be an important part of the package.

Does this seem reasonable until such time that it becomes more clear how we can handle the development?

That's very generous. I will be keeping mine though, it's simply too useful, and without peer currently in the market place. I just find it a little irksome to program and irksome again that by the time a software editor is released I'll have done most of what I need the hard way.

Just the early adopter blues, maybe.

Downplaying the editor: probably a good idea.

Offering the refund: extremely magnanimous.

But, not to beat a dead horse, you've still got that user LFO which will draw attention to the issue. At least for the small subset of people who care about it in the first place.

@Adamixoye
I've been running tests with the BeatBuddy and HUB, and cannot get it to malfunction. In this video, I'm sending MIDI clock from the BB --> HUB --> Orbital. I used various presets, hoping/not hoping, that it would jump to zero, and it never did. I left it sitting for 20 minutes, and it still remained on the intended preset. I'm starting to think that the problem could be stemming from your HUB hardware. If so, we can get that working with a repair/swap.

Quick question to blox2 users: are these really 4.5" tall? In picture they look more like 4.3x4.5". Just asking to see if an OFD would fit on my mini (not PT) board with Lava jacks.

Hope this helps.

FWIW I just got a Zivix PUC+ today and used that to monitor my Beat Buddy output into the snoize MIDI Monitor on my Mac. Unlike using the M-Audio UNO as my interface, I was able to see MIDI Clock, Start/Stop, and MIDI Note On/Off (MIDI Notes only while playing). But that is all I saw. So my suspicion is that you're correct, that even though Beat Buddy MIDI data is correlated with the odd behavior, it may be a problem specific to my Hub, perhaps hardware-related.

Interestingly enough, tonight the behavior of my Hub was different---I replicated the problem briefly, but then the Hub started responding erratically, period. As far as I could tell, not all MIDI commands were being passed to the SB2 pedals. This is a really odd coincidence, but I think it puts more weight into the "my Hub is broken" theory (which was already sort of winning on Occam's Razor if nothing else). I'll be contacting the SA help e-mail.

Thanks again for checking it out, @Nathan Navarro. Apparently not just your videos are awesome.

Source Audio can deal with this the way that works best for SA. We are fans and customers and are providing the best feedback that we can regarding products and expectations.

All of the SA products since the SB2 and Hub including all new and to be released products have some sort of external app/program based editing capability. The Reflex would greatly benefit from this type of interface, and releasing this feature would be consistent with all current SA product capabilities. If it takes 6 months or more to release this for the Reflex then that is what it takes. It will be disappointing if you abandon this now.

If SA does abandon the Reflex software editor, a refund, while generous, is not really the correct approach. As the product price of the Reflex should account for the editor development, then it makes more sense to adjust the price of the product accordingly. For those that have already purchased the product then some type of remuneration or rebate could be arranged.

Just to be clear, I am not suggesting that the Reflex software editor be abandoned. I just want to ensure that new buyers do not purchase the product with the expectation that it will be coming on a schedule that can be counted on......and then become disappointed with us when it is delayed. I already have 3 people disappointed and I want to have zero!

By the way, I do appreciate the direct, honest and sincere feedback, which this clearly is.

The cost to make this pedal ballooned as more functions and features were added on. At $219 we do OK when we sell it directly via our store, we are worse than OK when we sell it to store in the US, and we are terrible when it goes to our distributors outside the US. If the market will not accept $219, then we will discontinue making the product eventually. As is sometimes the case, it is a cool niche product with unattractive economics. I was not in fully in favor of its creation, but my engineering orientation makes be cave in to the passions of development team.....most of the time!!

The Reflex is killer and a great price to performance value. I don't mean to come off as in any way dissappointed with the product in general, I just want to get the most out of it with the least effort, as there is a lot that it can do.

I hope it stays for years to come, and if it ever goes out of production I will buy a back-up or two, that's how much I like it.

And just to be clear, I'm in the same place...after working through some of the bugs, I am in no way disappointed. It does everything I thought it would, and more...except I really, really want to make my own LFO shapes and have some fun with those.
