Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

Here you go. A peek back into history.
I will note that we know digital: Nemesis, Ventris, C4, etc.
We know analog: ZIO
We know digital controlled analog: Neuro Module (well, we did get it to the demo stage!)

This is really cool, Roger! I hadn’t seen this before. I’d love to see this resurrected (if viable).

How easy was modding the analogue pedals? Was it something the end user could easily do or did it necessitate pedal manufacturers having to be on board?

This is something that looked really promising on paper but was difficult to realize in the real world. Each pedal required lots of special work to get it up and running. The pots in these pedals sometimes had voltage ranges that were unexpected and beyond the range of the digipots. Nevertheless, we learned lots of things technically and are in a strong position to add digital control of analog pedals should we decide this is part of our future. Lets see what happens with ZIO. Perhaps we will do some stuff like that in the future. As for the Neuro Module? Way too much engineering required on our end. Supporting DYI guys adding it in would be crazy. None of you want to pay someone $250 per hour to work 8 hours on adding something like this to an old analog pedal.

This reminds me of the "AutoPot" idea TheGigRig was working on about 5 years ago. As far as I know it never came to market though.

 
Great suggestion, and that's exactly what I would do for bass. For something to fill that niche on my guitar board, which I didn't mention was my real imagined purpose, I would prefer the types of tone-shaping on the ZIO.



This. For some reason I was expecting the pedal to have digital step controls or something. Maybe that was just someone speculating.

The pedal sounds great in the video and I hope it does well. I did recently move my Drybell Unit 67 to after my drives, so I may need something for the front of my guitar board... MIDI control would make the ZIO a no brainer but I may try it anyway.
I think the Zio has a few subtle uses for us Bassists. Sure, the 20db of gain is more guitar orientated. However, there's a few good reasons that this pedal could become the first pedal in one's chain. Firstly, the switch (By pass / Mute) dictates what the stomper "off" does. The amount of times I've wanted a mute switch that's easily accessible. Another cool feature is with passive basses, using a neutral sounding buffer to stage my bass' passive signal to the rest of my board in a buffer friendly way. It also provides me a way to dial in a matched impedance from a hot bass. In theory, the output dial from the Zio should allow the input volume > output volume to be impedance transparent. One of the reasons I like Digital dirt is that I can dial in a "grit sound" that isn't bass specific. With some analogue dirt, they play better with passive pickups. Active pickups tends to overwhelm analogue dirt pedals due to the vastly different impedance levels. The Zio should means that the difference between an active and passive bass is just a turn down or up from the Output dial. Where as at the moment, my active bass can't be turned down enough for some of my lighter (2 transistor) overdrives. I'm wondering if there's mileage in having a Zio attached to one's belt. It certainly works best as a 1st pedal / pedal board input buffer.
I think if you have a large 300w Valve head, the 20db gain stage is more relevant and adds a third trick.
It's taken me a while to see the value of this new pedal, I'm sure it'll be quite a winner for Source Audio.

Solid points. Yet for me, normalized grit sounds would be a great thing to save to presets, particularly in circumstances where I might switch instruments mid-set. I know I'm being nitpicky, and remembering and executing one knob turn isn't a big deal, but on top of singing, running Ableton, etc it would be one more thing...

Yeah, watching Andy's Demo and the official video convinced me there's more to it than I was thinking, and a better way to start my mono signal and split it than the Aftershock>EQ2 I currently start with, which forces me to make my presets on AS have the right be a clean out, since that is my clean for bass, though for guitar I will sometimes use a Tube Screamer on both channels, and the ZIO would be even better for that, and to drive my guitar, which is an acoustic/electric, so can use the help. But it' not something I gots to have right now, tomorrow. An SA Compressor, in the other hand, is straight cash. On the ZIO, I will definitely be tuning into new videos about this one and prolonging the inevitable as long as I can.

I have built a working prototype thad does exactly this. Its very similar except my system is backdriveable, and therefore allows you to set tones with your hands in a traditional way. its also a lot less intrusive and wont need a servo/motor on the pedal like this system. In fact my design only uses 1 motor for 8 chanels which is the key to keeping the costs down.
 
The Ultrawave compressor is brilliant.

It sure is, but I'm thinking if they do a dedicated compressor pedal, it would be the new standard, and would free up the UW in my chain from when it is used basically as an always on clean compressor, so I can use it for the crazy other sounds I can wrangle from it. Which also saves me from buying a second UW.

There's nothing to stop some one using the Ultrawave as a pure / bespoke Stereo midi controlled Compressor. Or a One channel compressor and One Channel Dirt pedal. The Balance control allows the blending of either channel. For some of my Patches (my muff patch comes to mind) I use the sustain control to dial in the amount of compression. There's no reason you can't remap the 4 pedal controls so that patch is a pure compressor with 4 compression controls mapped to it. Effectively becoming a 4 knob compressor for that patch. Get a Faderfox PC4 and you can map all of the 7 compression controls to Faderfox Midi CC dials.

In this way, those who own both the pedals, can apply two stages of compression at the beginning and at the end of the chain.
You can already use the UltraWave to apply (single-band) compression to two separate parts of the signal chain.

That would be cool for an "EQ3", since the display could be used to show gain reduction as well. Or even some representation of the compression graph in the editor.
 
Picked up a Collider delay/reverb last week to integrate into my bass pedalboard. Wow! Really is a perfect ambient pedal for bassists. Parallel processing, easy tweaking even without a pc or app, and great sounding algorithms! I picked up an inexpensive 2 button footswitch to scroll through presets which minimizes me having to bend over (well into your 40's, this matters!).

One question about scrolling through the presets: I understand there are actually 8 slots available without using midi. How do I access them & can I scroll to those with my external footswitch?

As always, Source Audio is knocking it out of the park!

You need to switch on “extended preset mode” in the global settings and then you can access these in the same way as the current four.
