Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

Sorry to go off topic. The new app works great on my IPad mini.

here’s my question. I’m great on the C4. I just got the Ultra Wave and the Atlas. So, on the C4 I can make tweaks in the pedal with the knobs and then long press the pedal to save those changes on the pedal. On the other 2, is there a way to save small pedal knob tweaks so that when I come back to it, it is left the same as I had set it? The long pedal press doesn’t appear to re-save it. Or will I have to plug in the iPad, find the patch, set, save, and re-burn?

The same thing is possible on those pedals too. You need to plug into the desktop editor, go to the settings icon and put the pedal into “preset” mode.

Important information on the status of things. THANK YOU of being patient.

I need to address the status of the various releases. I am going to try and nail things down further today, but this is my current take (its 2:30am ET Sunday morning).

Artifakt Hardware: It's in excellent shape. A firmware update will certainly come at some point, but we are happy with it. As you can see from this post, YOU DONT NEED A PHONE OF COMPUTER to get more out of this pedal than 99% of the pedals on the market today. Our dealers shipped lots of pedals on Thursday and Friday, so it's great that the apps are a secondary feature with this one.

Neuro 3: First, this community has been patient with the faults with the new release. Thank you for understanding that this is an ambitious effort by a small company. Artifakt forced us to rush the N3 release. Adding the Hub and firmware updates was much more time consuming and complex than expected. In retrospect, we should have delayed the release of any N3 components until things were stable. At the moment we are going to focus on getting N3 stable WITHOUT Artifakt support. This should not take long. We are close. Let's look at each platform.

Mobile: There are some known crashing issues and lack of support of the old TRS audio jack connection to pre-Artifakt pedals (Artifakt does not support TRS connection, because audio jacks are disappearing from phones). Some releases included Artifakt, but they did not connect to the pedal. This was not intentional. Some new releases are coming.

Desktop: Older versions of Mac OS are not yet supported. We don't know how far back we are going to go eventually, but initially its going to be limited. There are some issues with the update features in Neuro 3. We do not recommend users doing and updates at the moment and we will be disabling the features for some pedal models temporarily while we get things sorted out. Please note that if you had issues using the update, you can use Neuro Desktop 0.8.71 to refresh the pedal and get back to normal operation.

Again, thank you all for your support. We are very committed to getting back on track with N3 shortly!

Thanks for the update!! And all the hard work. You guys rock \m/

None of mine make that sound but i can't do anything with my Source Audio pedals with Neuro 3. The previous version was fine but the new one has replaced the old one on my Desktop and isn't usable.

Have you tried doing a factory reset on the Atlas??

After downgrading Neuro to 0.8.71 I was given the option to update Atlas. It's not spitting out noise anymore, but instead has gone completely silent when engaged. Onscreen controls still respond to physical knob turns, but the metering is frozen.
*EDIT restarted the Atlas pedal, it is once again emitting noise instead of sound or silence, regardless of input

Artifakt arrived today [only a day late] I have barely scratched the surface going over the 7 engine settings, tweaking a few knobs and I certainly see huge potential for production and adding some vintage spice to bass lines and performance. This is going to take a good while for me to grok everything going on but IMHO Source Audio has a new hit on their hands. It really adds a dimension to the synth and experimental stuff I have been delving into and it has potential for bass too. I will take some time next week to really get under the hood and tinker with the Elements, then try my hands with some bassic meat and potato bass patches and go from there.

Really looking forward to getting under the hood but there much to tweak even w/o Neuro.

Try doing a hard reset (power on with footswitch held). Then try reloading the firmware via 0.8.71.

Can't wait to make some dirty bass sounds with it.

To be honest...you don't have to rush into it and do a deep dive...that can be overwhelming. Just find the good stuff initially and enjoy the deeper stuff over the next few years.

I'm so disappointed to hear that SA is phasing out the TRS audio-data starting with Artifakt.

It's true that newer phones don't have headphone outs any more, but even the Apple® branded adapter is only $10 US.

I use the adapter and it works GREAT. I've got my big SA pedal board all chained together with TRS, and I can access each of the 5 pedals with one connection to the first pedal in the chain. Super easy, and very reliable. USB requires much more hassles to access multiple pedals.

There are other possibilities, like sending various commands & settings via audio-- (from a loop pedal for example), there are lots of cool things you can do. Alas.

I was thinking with the new Neuro, that various macro things (ordinarily handled by the Neuro hub) could be sent via TRS audio/data; so again, it's kind of sad to see that tech fall away. It was in someways a revival of an older tech where audio was used to store synth data onto a cassette-- but I've been impressed with how smoothly it works.

Unfortunatly, it's the future calling. My beloved 5 pin din midi is going the way for the dynosaur too. I'm still quite choke about that...but the trrs to midi saves a lot of hardware / jack space.

I'm wondering if, in the future, we'll be seeing the signal path for our Source Audio pedals connecting together digitally and not via the current phono jacks. So you would use the phono jacks in at the beginning of your chain...and phono jacks out at the end but no other DA/AD conversions throught the entire signal path. Almost zero latency across a whole board. It also means that you could hook up different elements / processing blocks in each pedals and feed them into other elements in other pedals in any order. Imagine a C4 that could access all of the Ultrawave's dirt as part of it's internal processing / signal path. you could arrange yourpedals in any order by patch and each pedal could offer a set of sound blocks that could interect with each other pedal...

Roger has already stated publicly that S/PDIF is coming, so yes, conversion at beginning and end of chain only with digital signal passed through:
Ethernet for pedal connections?

You may be one of the few using the TRS for connecting SA pedals, I'm using the USB all connected through a USB hub for the same thing.

Yea, this happens to me from time to time. I come to rely on some arcane feature that others don't bother with, and I have to shed a tear, realizing I'm a relic.

When it comes to connectivity, Apple ditches USB A/B/1, Firewire, CD-burner, Ethernet, line-in, headphone, and we cart tons of gear to the landfill.

I don't mean to get dramatic. I had hoped SA would stick to their guns on this one, as it is very clever.

This is likely one of those areas where the app analytics has told Source Audio that very few people use it.

Neuro TRS cable user here, I'm going to miss it as well. While there are some limitations, it is just so convenient to use one cable to change settings on multiple pedals.

Who knows, perhaps the next generation SA pedals will include blutooth so no need for communication cables at all...

Should we invest more and more $$ to keep TRS alive or invest in Bluetooth? It's insane to try and do both. BT must be our future.

Actually no. This is not the case. I posted the comments below in another thread and it gives all the background. I loved this feature too and I am bitter that the world punished us for trying to be innovative. Oh well... I am grateful for lots of things too! :)

I hear you. I am also disappointed.

It was great when it was iPhone only and somewhat reasonable for us to support. You will note that we created the calibration routine along the way. This needs constant updates as Apple and other phone manufacturers change the behavior of their audio systems every month, sometimes more. Supporting this feature has been a nightmare. Customers have also demanded USB, USB-C, and Bluetooth. Do you know how many times I have read how backwards and dumb we are for using this connection scheme in app reviews by people who don't bother to read the manual and realize we support USB? Thanks for the 1 star review. We have also worked with thousands of customers helping them connect. At some point we can't keep throwing so much money supporting this innovation which was crucified publicly by so many. We did put this into N3, and that was probably unwise... But I listen carefully to what all of you say and try to do my best. A smarter CEO would have killed this program the minute USB support was added. Sorry for the rant, but I want everyone to know all the considerations behind our decisions.
Here are my previous comments on this topic:
"When we original came out with Neuro 1.0 in 2015, we thought it would be hailed for how clever we were. By using the ring on input/output 2, it allowed an iPhone phone to communicate with not one, but as many One Series pedals as one wanted. Android users howled with complaints of discrimination. So, we made a huge, unexpected investment into Android. Unlike iPhones, the audio section of Android phones are ALL OVER THE MAP. All of a sudden, we were in the business of making an app work with 50+ different phones with all kinds of stupid things (phase reversal, high noise floor, attempts are "sound enhancement", etc). We kept at it, and our connection rate is like 99%. But those 1% are vocal and scream when their phones don't connect, because there are no audio engineers working at the low-cost Android phone company they have used. And then iPhones lost the headphone jack. Yes, it still works using the adapter shipped with all iPhones, but users lost them and blamed us. Many users love this feature, but it has been SOOOO challenging for us to support. (sorry for the rant, but I like to share the thinking that impact our product direction)
Moving forward, we see that USB and Bluetooth are increasingly important ways for phones to connect to our pedals. It's so much more reliable AND it offers bi-directional communication."
