Source Audio Sourcerers Society (S.A.S.S.) Pt 2

I think some of you may have touched on or addressed these issues already, but I have relatively little experience with MIDI (and none when it comes to my bass rig setup specifically) so if you did I didn't catch the answer(s). That being said, here are my questions:

Let's say you have an SB2 Manta and an SB2 Dimension Reverb on your board, connected to the SA Hub with a Midi switcher, like the One Control Gecko for example. You need that switcher (or another like it) in order to switch between scenes, correct? Switching between scenes with just the Hub by itself is impossible, right? Am I understanding this correctly?

My next question is this: Let's say you save two presets on the SB2 Dim. Reverb and two on the SB2 Manta that you love. Then you save another two on the Dim. Reverb under Scene 2. Is it possible to use one of those Scene 2 sounds on the Reverb with one of the original two saved presets on the Manta?
If the answer is no, I guess I'm a little daunted by how much preparation I'm imagining this would take, especially if you rely on multiple SB2 pedals to achieve your sound. For example, if you wanted a big, spacious reverb sound and thought it would be cool to add a phaser from the SB2 Orbital Modulator to it, would you have to already have that planned out by making sure those two sounds, the reverb and the phaser, were a part of the same Scene?

Okay, that's all! :p Sorry if that was confusing/wordy.

I hear you! Midi is daunting and somewhat intimidating. That's what's great about the HUB. It takes some of the planning and routing out of the equation. IMO. I've finally taken the step. Almost every pedal available is maximized by utilizing the outward control of midi.

To your questions.

Question #1- yes you need an external controller for the HUB to store a scene.

Question #2- Yes you can utilize the presets for scenes. If you had the Manta and the Dimension. You could have 2 presets per pedal. For filters and reverbs that's great. So with your presets you could have 4 combinations you love. If you add the Hub and, I use the midimouse, an external controller you could utilize all 24 of the filters and all 12 different reverbs in different combinations. The best part is that if needed something special for an intro you can save a scene utilizing a totally different filter or reverb effect totally different than your presets. You could literally have custom scenes per part per song in your whole set utilizing different filters and reverbs and still have your 2 go to presets. Up to 128 different scenes!!! Now imagine adding the Orbital Modulater and one of the gain pedals(Ofd, multiwave or classic) and the unlimited different combinations you could
create without worrying about turning pedals off and on.

To me the Hub is a game changer. I would suggest it to anyone who utilizes multiple effects a lot. The SB2 pedals sound great and control every parameter worth controlling. You add in the versatility of saving different scenes with ease really let's you be in control of your creativity without limitations.

I hope this helps.

Btw it's very easy to dial in tones with the SB2 pedals and save the scenes on the Hub. It's not as daunting as it may seem. Once you wrap your head around how the parameters work together and realize what you need you can easily dial it in. You could setup a scene in two minutes and have it saved in two seconds. Trust me I am very intimidated by the whole midi thing. If I can wrap my head around it and utilize the Hub then anyone can. It really is very simple. As a plus if you ever have an issue Rsmith601 and the rest of the Source Audio crew's customer service is top shelf. They will do everything possible to help!!!

Correct. The Hub changes Scenes by receiving MIDI PC (patch change) from a MIDI controller of your choice.

The Hub does NOT have the ability to change scenes on it's own.

My next question is this: Let's say you save two presets on the SB2 Dim. Reverb and two on the SB2 Manta that you love. Then you save another two on the Dim. Reverb under Scene 2.

Here is where the current Hub Scene saving functionality is a little different than what you're used to with the patch saving feature of the SB2 pedals.

Each Scene only saves ONE "patch" of data from each SB2 pedal. Technically, it's not saving either of the existing patches on the SB2 pedal. Instead, it's saving the current state of all of the parameters as they are currently set when you press the Save Scene button on the Hub. However, the two patches saved locally on the SB2 pedal are still there and can be utilized without issue. So you technically get THREE voices from each SB2 pedal per Hub Scene. 1) The sound saved in the Hub with the Scene 2) Whatever is saved on the pedal for Patch1 and 3) Whatever is saved on the pedal for Patch2.

This is a slightly different workflow than you're used to when working with just the SB2 pedals by themselves.

Is it possible to use one of those Scene 2 sounds on the Reverb with one of the original two saved presets on the Manta?

Absolutely.

Here's the workflow for creating those Scenes using the Hub.

* Send MIDI PC to the Hub to select whichever Scene you want to create.
* Select whatever Reverb sound you want. You can simply pick whatever sound is already saved to Patch1 or Patch2, if that's what you want to do, or create a totally different sound.
* Select whatever Manta sound you want. You can simply pick whatever sound is already saved to Patch1 or Patch2, if that's what you want to do, or create a totally different sound.
* Now save the Scene on the Hub.

If you wish to copy a sound you've saved to a particular Scene, you can still use those sounds as the basis for a totally different scene by using the Hub's Copy feature. It will copy the entire Scene so you can make a duplicate in a new Scene, then modify any of the pedal sounds as you wish, then save the new Scene.

Okay, that's all! :p Sorry if that was confusing/wordy.

What you'd really want to do in this particular case is have two totally different Scenes saved.

Scene 1: Only big, spacious reverb is setup. Everything else is bypassed.
Scene 2: The same reverb, but also a phaser from the SB2 Orbital Modulator. Everything else is bypassed.

Now you just switch Scenes using your MIDI controller, the SB2 pedals instantly change to the settings you had them set at when you saved the two Scenes.

Hope this helps. :)

Well, I am making the midi jump. I just ordered the hub and a dual expression pedal. I am just going to wait a bit before I get the dimension reverb.

I will be removing the Zoom B3 from the board to make space for all of this. The OFD has just so many possible tones that I need something to store them. I know that the HUB will be great for the orbital and manta as well, but, the OFD alone justifies it for me.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my numerous Hub/MIDI-related questions!

I realize now that my main hang-up / point of confusion was that I was thinking of the Hub as saving additional sets of two presets, whereas it's really saving additional "pictures" (i.e., scenes) of all connected SB2 pedals' settings at any given point in time. That makes everything make much more sense now. Thanks, guys!

This whole MIDI thing is starting to seem a whole lot less daunting now. :) I guess for me it's not even the fact that I felt I might not be able to wrap my mind around it as much as I just feel a bit resistant to scrap and replace so much of my board and start over with MIDI. :hmm: Hmm...

Manta, OFD, Orbital, Hub, HotHand...

Oh my, I'm in a lot of trouble here...

So far I only got the HH3 and OFD...

Sigh...

LOL!

All I have is the SB2 Dimension Reverb. I want an Orbital Modulator, OFD, Manta, Hub, HH3, and MIDI switcher at this point. I'm right there with you! haha
