Source Audio Sourcerers Society (S.A.S.S.) Pt 2

So, I'm home. Finished the show. I have to say, I honestly can't tell y'all how good the OFD sounded. I'm so disappointed and frustrated. My monitor was so loud that it sounded like it was blown. But if I asked him to turn it down I couldn't hear myself. It was a bad night on stage. The audience said we sounded great but all I heard the whole time we were up there was straight farting and fuzz out out of my monitor. I couldn't even hear my amp! It was loud. I don't know if the sound guy knew what he was doing. Or the monitor was blown. I use a lot of dirt throughout a set but that wasn't it. I'm just really discouraged right now because of the whole performance. I'll have to wait till practice next week to give it a real run.

Fired up my new manta today. Mind blown! In the 25 minutes I got with it today I couldn't be more pleased. I can get the distorted filter sound I have been looking for for years.
Its great in that i can play soft and still get a good envelope attack and when i dig in, the distortion is very grindy and nice. The pedal fits my playing style wonderfully.

Insane amount of sounds can be had. Their is a learning curve for sure, But not as hard to understand as I was expecting.

Best part is now I don't have to spend double on the Tru Tron 3x

Bummer to hear that, where were you playing? In my playing history, I've found that very few sound guys are very helpful (at least at the level we are at now). I know it's not possible or practical for everyone, but we actually request for NOTHING to be in our monitors on the front line (unless it's a super dead/treated room like Lincoln Hall in Chicago). It's mostly to avoid any type of vocal feedback, and if the sound guy doesn't oblige we'll go ahead and just unplug the monitors. Our drummer just gets a little bit of the lead vocals, and that's it in his monitor. It's hard to get used to at first, but now that we are ONLY listening to our backlines, it makes it easier to stay consistent on a night to night basis (we rehearse in the same way). The next step is in ear monitors for the whole band, but obviously that's an expensive step and requires a little more time on the setup side of things.

I will say that the only time I ever want the bass in my monitor is I'm on a super hollow stage that sounds detuned, that can be very distracting and hard to sing in tune, of course.

I haven't played Lincoln Hall, but it consistently has the best sounding rock shows in the city by far. If a band I like just a little bit is playing there I make it a point to go. They definitely knew what they were doing when they but that place out.

We were at the penny road pub in barrington il. It seemed like the sound would've been awesome when were doing sound check but as soon as we started playing and I couldn't hear my amp I knew something was not good. We opened for saving Abel, a rather popular group around here. But they already had all their stuff set up including the drums which left little to no room on the stage. My drummer couldn't even set up his own kit so he had to use the kit that was up there already. I got some distaste from the other bands there about that. It's nice to provide stuff like that but we had all our own stuff already so we would like to use it. We've never thought about not using monitors before. Not sure if my band would go for that. The vocalist def needs his though. Ah well, live and learn. Thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah that club is incredible sounding. One of the best I've been in, for sure. On stage though, you get NO reflections from the room, it sounds like your sound goes out 3 ft and immediately dies. Luckily after watching other bands sound check, I had confidence that even though we felt super wimpy on stage, I was sure the crowd was getting an excellent mix. Top notch sound guys there as well.

And greg - I used to run sound (summer 2008) at Penny Road Pub. Not sure if the gear is the same, but it was pretty dated back then. I was able to get pretty solid mixes there though, and always took care to dial in monitor mixes. That said, the company who runs sounds there treats it as their bottom of the barrel club, so they put their most junior techs onsite, unfortunately. You may have had a bad one.

I hate when bands think they can backline drumkits on small stages. Our drummer refuses to play other kits, so we always raise hell about that. I don't mind amps being backline, of course, but leaving your drums set up at place like Penny Road is ridiculous. If you're playing Metro or bigger, then I get it. Bands constantly do that to us at Bottom Lounge, which if you've been there is a super wide stage and super shallow. We end up setting drums up at the front of the stage. Dumb. Hope you have better luck next time, I'm sure the OFD sounded great :)

I ordered a Soundblox 2 MWBD from Prymaxe, but the box just says Multiwave Distortion. Did they just send me the wrong pedal? The slip in the shipping box even says "Bass Distortion," so I know I ordered the correct thing.

On a side note, the packaging is really dope.

What pedal is inside the box?

Oh yeah, I forgot the pedal itself has the model printed on it. Oy, I was forgiving when they sent a pedal with a rip in the packaging, but this is pretty stupid.

I noticed the barcode on the bottom of the box says "Bass Distortion." I guess Prymaxe mislabeled their stuff. I wonder if their actual MWBD pedals are labeled as the guitar version then.

Yes there is. This is the third iteration of the Multiwave Distortions and there's been a bass and guitar model for each.

Looks like they miscoded the box. Simple mistake and they're super good about returns, especially when it's something small on their behalf like that.

Figured I'd post my board with all my SA's in a row :) I'm trying the joyo Dseed for a little bit in place of the 4096. I don't think it'll last long though, the Dseed sounds really sweet but it's pretty hard to beat the 4096, that thing sounds friggen beautiful! Depends on what you're going for too.

Pretty nice Source Audio love there Gregmon! How are you liking that Manta? I'm digging mine so far, but am still having a little trouble dialing in the HH3 with it. (but I'll admit, I haven't had as much rehearsal/knob time with it as I'd like)

I dig it dude. I'm not a big filter guy but the sounds you can get out of the manta are fine as heck! My main reasoning behind grabbing it was to get an HH3 eventually to go in tandem with it. I really want to do some upright type amost jawsy type stuff. Behndy totally made wants the HH3. I like the fact that you can do some dub stuff too but the ebow sounding stuff you can accomplish with it sounds awesome. I also would like to get an SA expression pedal too eventually.

What sort of sounds are you trying to dial in? Earlier in the thread (or maybe it was another one? definitely the Manta settings thread) I posted some tips I got directly from Roger Smith and Jon Dusoe about dialing in dub sounds with the HH3.

The basic idea was "X-axis, unprocessed" on the HH3 (all lights on the receiver GREEN), and then the "depth" and "speed" knobs on the Manta control the "depth" and "smooth" for the HH3. This was very helpful for me to understand. I put the depth at about 1:30 and the speed at about 10:30.

I'm not 100& sure what I'm looking for at the moment, but close to dubstep stuff I guess... to use in my urban gospel band of all places. lol I've been using the right switch to preset my fav envelope setting and the left switch for experimenting a bit.

Thanks for the tip, I'll read back through the thread... the biggest thing I'm trying to dial in at the moment is the ring's sweep. At the moment, it's either too quick and abrupt, or too sluggish. I think I just need more time with it to figure out how things interact, like you said... control things on the Manta or the HH3. :)

Happy to fix anything that needs to be fixed!! Send a note to [email protected]. We will get right on it.

The speed knob becomes the key control when in Hot Hand mode. Don't use the controls on HH3. Just stick to the Manta. If you can't find the old post, we can make a new one. JLMK
