Source Audio UltraWave ~ Catch the Wave

I’m using it right now to move up and down, but there’s not a way to jump to a specific preset then other than to scroll through them?

Yes there is. Midi "CC" is an abbreviation for Midi Continuous Controller. You have two numbers / settings with every Midi CC message. The CC# Number (between 0-127) and the CC# Value. The number is mapped to a specific "Assigned Parameter" and the value is what that parameter is changed too. Some Midi controllers need to send the Midi Channel number too. So on my Boss ES-5, my midi command will look like this> Midi Ch 10 / CC# 104 / Value 2. This will send a Midi command to my Ultrawave that is on Midi Channel 10, it will instruct my Ultrawave to Preset Recall ON, Preset number 3.

I currently have 12 midi channels populated on my board...only 3 more devices and my midi capacity is maxed out.

CC#104/103 (depending whether you want the pedal to change patch and engage or be bypassed), the CC# value is your patch (1-128). Some devices use value 0 to navigate to patch 1, others get this bit right.

If you want to change patch number, the CC# Number stays the same but the value needs to change according to your desired new patch number.

You can assign any Midi CC# number via the device midi mapping table to any of the available functions. Which you do via the Neuro desktop interface. The Assigned parameter is "Preset Recall (On)" and "Preset Recall (OFF)". On my device, I have CC# 103 set to "Preset Recall (OFF)" and CC# 104 set to "Preset Recall (ON)".

aaah got it, i just couldn’t figure out what i was doing wrong lol

By the way, tested some of your fuzz presets. Had to tweak it slightly to suit my setup but really good fat tones!

You are very welcome. One of the joys of the ultrawave is it's ability to model a vast array of distortion tones. It can do light and transparent Overdrive, through to gut wrenching Fuzzed overdrive. It can do heavy gated fuzz, it can do transistor sounding octave fuzz, it can do the crazy synth foldback / multiband fuzz. It can do any type of compression in any of the above dirt and it can morph / blend between any of the above distortion engines and EQ.
I have one patch that uses both left and right channels, it has a different dirt on each channel. Using the balance control, it blends between the two channels. It means this patch can have 2 independent sets of full patch settings that can be blended. I like to go from Compressed heavy overdrive (like a muff) balanced with a heavy Gated diode fuzz (with no compression).
Then I can set up a 2nd morph option on each channel (making 4 dirt options) and use the morph control shared across both channels. No I have 4 dirt sounds in one patch. It means that your assigned controls are Balance and Morph, loosing the normal controls for those knobs....but come on...4 completely different dirt models that are blendable / morphable....that's insane!
As a result, I literally only use about 4 different dirt patches on my Ultrawave. I have 1 compression patch and one rhythmic tremolo patch. Each patch is super dense and super versatile. If this pedal's hardware was ever expanded upon, I would suggest adding 2 more assignable control knobs and that's all it needs to be THE very last word in bass dirt. I would have Balance and Morph as my other two controls. I use a FaderFox PC-4 and I have 2 knobs assigned to those two functions. The Ultrawave is pretty much a perfect device in my opinion.
I have an Aftershock too, which I've had for 4 years now, it has some of my favourite fuzz and overdrive settings in it's 6 slot patch memory. I could replicate those patches on my Ultrawave, but at the moment I like having 2 stackable dirt pedals on my board. I might flip my Aftershock for the new Source Audio Compressor.

yes, that’s what i found was so great with the uw. I have left all my previous dirt, and am only using what i can come up with the UW.
Morph function is great and I use it with an expression pedal hooked up to a mc8. Usually for going between teo eq settings or going from clean(or cleanish) to overdrive or fuzz, or into gated madness.
I also have an eq2, that together with a compressor pedal used to be my clean tone.
I havn’t used it in this context after getting the UW, but I’m thinking of putting it back in.
Using pre and post eq from the eq2, and having the UW sort of in the loop of the eq2…

Hi

New to the pedal and I can see using an exp pedal is the way to go.

Do you use the Source Audio exp pedal or another brand?
Any issues if you don't use the SA?

Thanks

You have a few options with expression in the Source Audio world. The simplest is a direct connection between your SA pedal and an expression pedal. This will need an adapter that connects the TRRS port on the device to the 1/4" TRS port on the expression pedal. Source Audio have a very useful blog article here: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
The issue is that there is only one TRRS port on a small one series device, so you loose any chance of connecting it to a Neuro Hub. Some small one Series devices can still access midi via the USB port, but not many can. If you use a Source Audio Dual Expression pedal, there's a TRRS port and cable to directly connect the two without the need for further adapters.

The other option is to use expression over Midi CC. This will need a 3rd party Midi controller like a Morningstar MC6 (very popular option) or in my case a Boss ES-5. This has a 1/4" TRS jack input that you plug in your Expression pedal into. The Midi controller will need to be configured to use your expression pedal (there's a lot of different wiring standards). then your midi controller can read your expression pedal's position and convert this to a Midi CC command and value.

Another option if you have a Neuro hub is to connect your expression pedal directly into your Neuro Hub's 1/4 TRS port. This is a bit tricky as each pedal has a slightly different Neuro Desktop interface (depending on it's age). The Neuro hub's expression interface in the Neuro Desktop has not been written or detailed yet and this function is not written down or explained anywhere on the Source Audio web site. it's effectively undocumented. I have tried this process myself and it seems that the interface has changed a while back and there is no obvious way to dial in specific CC numbers and Midi Channels. It looks like to me that you assign & enable remote expression on each device and the Neuro hub puts out expression values to all of it's attached devices. I think Quatschmacher got this working when he had only one SA pedal on his board, however I think the Neuro hub interface has changed since then and it's current form isn't documented.

So in short> yes a direct connection works well if you don't want the device controlled via midi or the Hub.
The better option is to use Expression over Midi CC, but that needs a midi controller.
The third and more complicated option is to use the Neuro Hub's 1/4" TRS jack and be prepared for a long night of experimenting.

Hey many thanks for such a detailed reply! Appreciate your time.

I'm trying not to buy into the hub and cc thing yet. Thinking that, with live gigs, I'll have some presets 'queued' up, maybe no more than 6 (but can use phone app to shift into more if needed). Already got audio pedals and a Boss GT-1B. So UW for 'specialist' alt sounds (we don't have a synth player in one band).

It's a really unique pedal, as we know. Something I'm finding, aside from all the sound permutations, is that it really gives emphasis on how you hit/pick/pluck/rub/bend/tap etc the strings?! Some particularly interesting sounds from reassessing 'traditional' bass playing technique? Tiny nuances make huge differences, off string, great percussive vibes etc. This is really great, in finding fresh approaches with the instrument.....

Cheers again

26432436[/URL], member: 316583"]Hi guys,

I updated Neuro desktop to latest version 0.8.55

I am now not seeing any levels on the compressor INPUT/OUTPUT graph? No line, just blank. Was working fine with previous version.

I have tried quitting/rebooting the software and also my laptop.

anyone experienced this?

I had the same problem and restarting my computer fixed it. Perhaps a full shut down and powering on? I’m on Mac, fwiw.
Edit: perhaps power cycle the pedal, too?

Ha ha! Yeah tried all that but still no joy. Bit weird. I'm using windows 10

Emailed SA support.
Don't want to uninstall/reinstall in case of losing 70odd presets saved to pedal. So will export /back those up first.
A back up is certainly in order, I try to back up mine at least once a month and save all my creations to the Neuro cloud even if not published.
I noticed the same thing after the updated install but once I rebooted my Acer laptop running Win X it was fine.

Thanks. So you can save to cloud without publishing?

Great. I need to transfer edited presets to the mobile app library, so I can save to pedal as required. Don't need to publish the edits

Ha ha, greedy though?? Confused....

I found out the mobile app doesn't access same library as desktop. So want my presets accessible from mobile app....

Correct, the mobile Neuro app has limitations you have to use the computer version to get all the functionality. I use a moderately priced laptop (not the cheapest but less than some of my SA and other pedals) to access Neuro for my SA pedals connected to a USB hub, IMHO a worthwhile investment to get the most out of those and my Zoom MS pedal on my board.

I don't really want to use laptop/desktop in studio with band, if I can help it. I sometimes do that set up to access Ableton clips and synths. More to carry, set up - trying to 'downsize'!

I only need to shuffle though some presets, tweak as necessary. So will use mobile app.

Oh I get your greedy reference now .... Keeping presets unpublished to myself?? I'm talking about other folks presets from the cloud that I just tweaked the levels, so to have unity, when stomping from 1 to the other. When I've finished making my own presets worth publishing, then I will do so. But still at the work in progress stages.....

Follow up :

When I updated the desktop app, the graphic line on the compressor graph was no longer showing. I use Windows 10.

Using the contact form on SA site, I got a response and they sent a new download, which has rectified the issue. They advised that this has been happening mostly with mac but obviously I was windows.

Anyone else had this quirk?

Yes, though I had actually forgotten about it, because that was last weekend, and this past weekend, when I booted up the pedals, the graphic line was back, and I know that for sure, because I was tweaking it to get my main compressor preset dialed in again before I get an Atlas to play with, because then my main use for the UW will be back to its designed purpose of making killer distortion sounds, rather than as my always on compressor/clean sound with a touch of Room or Plate reverb. I think I had like 4 pedals needing updating, or 3 and the Hub, that was the only quirk that resulted as far as I know, and it somehow seems to have fixed itself.
