Source Audio UltraWave ~ Catch the Wave

The UltraWave is here and I'll get to check it out as the week progresses.

I did get to open the box. I bought it used so it only came with the TRRS and 1/8" to 1/4" cables. I didn't know that, but honestly, it wasn't in the sale photos either. My "old man bag of cables and adaptors" came to the rescue, where I found a mini USB to USB-A cable, and a USB-A to USB-C adaptor. So I got it hooked up to the computer. It appears the previous owner didn't wipe the presets so I'll go through them and see what I like before removing them.

I have a USB host adaptor coming this weekend, and hopefully I can use it to plug in an iPhone cable, so I have mobile capabilities too.

On TGP, Disaster Area said I could use the 1/4" adaptor to connect the Ultrawave to the DMC Micro. Hopefully, I can do that, and use the usb cables to keep it connected to the computer/phone at the same time.
If something winds up not acting as it should, look to those cables...

Didn't get a lot of time tonight, but I got some.

Is it me or do the basic distortions have some upper octave to them? This could be because I'm playing a guitar Ultrawave and not the bass one, and the stock EQ points could be different.

The octave sound I was using on the Multiwave isn't there. Now that could be because the algorithm was improved on the Ultrawave, but I'll have to work some to dial it in.

The sound I thought would be hard to find is somewhere in the Octave Fold range. It's probably the first one and I'm on the third one.

Through midi, how would I switch between channel 1 and channel 2 on a preset? My goal is to dial in the basic distortion on channel 1 and the octave fold on channel 2, each with their own EQ and drive settings, and switch between them. Once I have that, I can publish my first preset, FKCN Midnight Giants, which is the whole point of this pedal.

you use morph and ”balance” to go between ch1 and ch2. You can then also assign the mix knob to also set balance between the two channels.

I may be able to have all 3 settings I use on the Multiwave in a single preset on the Ultrawave. If I can assign the morph to one midi footswitch and the balance to the other.

The only question is whether I can toggle the DMC micro between preset mode and "play mode". Not sure, but not a dealbreaker either.

That's fine about the midi, I think I was confusing it with the phone audio output chaining thing. Eventually I'll go full hub/soleman/whatever is cool when I get there but for now it might be simpler to just get a 2nd m-vave for the ultrawave while I'm getting it set up.
Whatever you do don't get a soleman. I have 7 SA pedals and trying to get that thing to access all the pedals to select presets is impossible. Now watch someone here will say you can. Now when you ask how, crickets. Get something else like a morningstar

I started out with a Disaster Area DPC5, but quickly outgrew it. Not knocking it at all, it's a great device. But having only 4 midi channels to play with became limiting.
Moved to a morningstar MC6, and haven't looked back. Nearly unlimited options.
The DA stuff is a bit more 'paint by numbers'. The morningstar is a blank canvas...

I looked at the Morningstar MC3, but they're out of production.

Just wired this up, haven't plugged it in yet. USB host cable will arrive in the next few days. Delay is between outputs on the Ultrawave. We'll see how that works out. But it looks pretty.

I wouldn't say that you get crickets when you ask how. I spent quite some time writing up a "how-to" with screenshots and haven't received any feedback from you that let me know if the explanations were helpful or not.

but if you only want to control a few pedals I have a Soleman I’d let go cheap. Good deal if someone wants it. I too went morning star, but I have at least 10 SA pedals (I’ve lost count).

Yeah I'm quite sure It didn't cover what I'm referring to or I wouldn't be asking again, but I'll review it again and report back. If I didn't say thank you, I'll say it now. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Yep I reviewed not what I'm looking for. I simply want a device where I can switch to different pedals in this case 7, then select presets on the various pedals making up different combinations and saving those as scenes, for example I may have settings for my different basses, or effect presets, whatever. It's become obvious that the soleman can not do this. I still find it hard to believe I'm the only person looking to do this.

It's amazing what you can learn by reading the manual. LOL.

I was correct about the first Multiwave sound being the basic distortion into a single EQ band. Turn off everything you can except the distortion block. Put all settings at noon, set the single band drive at about 80/254. That's sound #1.

I think my basic octave up sound might be the Absolute Value setting, which describes itself as a digital Super Fuzz. So yeah, that's in my wheelhouse. Here's where things get tricky. I'll have to figure out whether I want that as a single band or if I want to modify Basic Distortion #1 so I can have more bands for Octave Fuzz #2. Then I can morph between them by assigning morph on Channel 1 to a DMC button.

I'm reasonably certain the FKCN Midnight Giants sound (Fake Canadian is my band, Midnight Giants is one of our songs) is Octave Fold 1. If I'm reading the manual correctly, I can put that sound on Channel 2 and then assign the balance control to the other DMC button to flip between channels. I won't get any morph capabilities on Channel 2 because my controller doesn't have enough buttons, but that's ok, I don't need anything else.

Set up this way, if I want to change presets, I need to flip the toggle switch. But I'm ok with that. I got to keep my tiny board and these three sounds are the only sounds I need right now in the band.

That said, I expect the next sound I program will have some heavy Slicer-esque tremolo on Channel 2, which is post DD6. There's a hilarious amount of cable underneath the board considering how small it is. LOL.

After a 24 hour local internet outage, and the arrival of the USB host cable, I've got the DMC Micro in Preset mode. I tried using the online Disaster Area editor. It only recognizes the pedal half the time and then doesn't really save my changes. I'm probably doing something wrong.

So I watched the Disaster Area C4 setup video and got the setup done on the pedal itself. Are there differences between the C4 mode and the Source Audio One Series mode? Ultrawave is newer than C4, so my guess is the C4 mode is the better one.

Onto the Ultrawave!

My first three sounds are super basic:
1. Basic Distortion
2. Absolute Value
3. Fold 1

I haven't gotten into any of the EQ yet. I'm just running things flat. With the compressor turned off, these three are more throaty than on the Multiwave, but they'll get me what I want. They're the most basic sounds you can get out of the unit.

Next up is seeing if I can use a dual momentary controller through the DMC's multijack to control morphs. If I can do that, then all of this goes into one preset. I'm not sure if it would work or how to do it though.

Rehearsal tonight. The Basic Distortion came out ok though I had to dial back the gain level. The other two sounded terrible. Too dirty/throaty and way loud. Now the tweaking begins.

One functional question. When changing presets on the DMC Micro, the Ultrawave automatically turns on. How do I stop that from happening?

Does that send cc103 or something. I think 103 is change and activate patch while 104 is change and bypass

I found using the top line of EQ on the editor to remove some top end and a touch of mids made a huge difference. Having a bit of post drive compression really helped give a tube drive vibe when I set my drive tones up.

Agreed. I haven't done much with the compressor yet. And the fully assignable 3 band eq is my first stop to dialing in sounds, long before I get into the multiband settings and graphic eq.

One question I do have is how the first drive control interacts with the multiband distortion controls. They seem somewhat redundant in single band mode, but I don't think that's actually the case.
