Soviet Tonika Bass - Exploded (Pic Heavy)

From one Canuck to another, brother, let it sleep. You'll only get more frustrated if you travel that road. It's like a federalist debating a separatist, nothing good can come of it.

True dat. Okay, consider it dropped.

That bass is way cool in it's cheesy-ness. OP get that thing working! Find a bar magnet and get those p'ups rocking through a tube amp! Whip it out for that special song where you need a dull thump mojo.

Yeah. I have a work buddy who's currently throwing a lot of money into rehabbing a pretty beat-up ABG. If there's one thing his experience is teaching me, it's that any bass, no matter how whacked-up, is salvageable. All it takes is money and a willingness to not look at the project as being fiscally 'worth it' or not.

Do you have a plan for the bass?

I'm working on one. I have to go to the luthier next week to pick up a Hagstrom he's doing a fret dress on, and I'm going to take it along and see what it would cost to put together a body like that and a neck with that shape headstock. If it's reasonable enough, I'll have him do it and then pull the pickguard, replace the pots and switch from the underside, and load the pup covers with cow magnet pickups. Actually, I just ordered some alnico cow magnets off Amazon, and I have some wire and wax already. May have to go with a real bridge/tailpiece.

Many of the Tonika basses had black painted headstocks, but I'm going to try and find some material to match the pickguard, or maybe some green mother of toilet seat would look nice up there...

Or maybe a cheap parts Tonika with a glitter headstock will show up on eBay...

Wow, that looks killer and I have no idea why! :D

i wonder what a luthier would charge to make a good version of that bass. couldn't be too difficult except for the neck inlay. you think it could get done for under $1000?

not that i'm shopping...

I've actually wanted to make a version of one of these for a while..... I have a plan..... and a weird 10 position pot with all kinds of resistors on it..... soon.

AND it would be WAY, WAY under $1000.... because that's just how I roll.

Actually that switch looks like a 5 position switch to me. Usually, there is some kind of little metal piece in there that acts as a stop. I'm thinking it is either broken or missing. According to the guy in the video it seems like the switch was meant to do neck/bridge/both/ off/ and some kind of extra mystery position which he describes as also some kind of neck/bridge combo.

Look, all I'm saying is that the usual knee-jerk American response to anything on the other side usually ignores some pretty basic facts. They got into space first, they commercialised getting people into space first, they essentially hounded NASA into getting onboard with the international space station. And for all their lower grade of tech, they kept the other side of the curtain going strong for nearly half a century, even though much of that side didn't want to be there. Obviously, there was something to them, even if it's not a system any of us would have like to live under.

As for us up here, we didn't have to do it first: After the Avro Arrow was cancelled, a couple dozen of our best aeronautics engineers went and got NASA to the moon.

I'm not bringing any of this up because it's important. I just figured that an ignorant statement needed a shot back. I'm not interested enough to really explore this. Especially since this is a thread about a bass.

I happen to think the bass is pretty cool looking, if not exactly pretty.

EDIT: Just thought of something. Doesn't one of the Flight of the Conchords dudes use a cheap Russian bass as well? I remember reading that somewhere.

Just as the typical Canadian knee-jerk response would be to...oh wait, that would be the third ignorant statement undeserving of a response. Why don't we stop while we're ahead, eh?

EDIT: Sorry for the slap...posted a bit too quick before seeing the makeup kisses.
