Spækerbœx: 27.2Hz High-pass filter

Good words to live by. Not that it's ever held me back, I just like to know what I'm talking about, so'z I don't do something like start a "What's the best...?" thread.

Just a word of warning, a basic electrical theory class will answer about 50 questions and open up 1000 more. It's good to have those 50 questions answered, but it wont give you all the answers.

There's always something to be learned. I just got off of two months of 12-hour night shifts, working 7 of every 14 days, and boy, I've had a lot of time to read about this pedal-copying/building stuff. Now just getting down to the particulars.

Dang. At work today for the next 11 hours. I just want to go home and add a cap to the circuit.
 
Updated. Added a polarised capacitor to the output and now the DC noise is gone. Spækerbœx has now reached 99% satisfaction.

Thank you for your input, everyone. Special thanks to Silent Fly for suggesting the DC voltage on the output. Every other schematic of basically everything that I've looked at has a cap on the out, except for this one. Duly noted for future projects.
 
did you try it in the loop?

the bass is active, right? it might still not put out as "robust" a signal as the amp loop, so the low input impedance of your gadget might still be loading it down a little.

Haven't had a chance to try the effects loop on the amp yet.

All of my basses/instruments are passive. (I am, however, going to build a preamp...)

From what I've read, wouldn't this also buffer the signal, thus lowering the impedance on the rest of the signal? Isn't that a good thing?
 
yeah, but the input impedance of the spækerbæx is rather low, thus loading down your passive pickup. This rolls off the highs and is referred to as "tonesuck" by some. It may not be an issue though, if you like that sound ;)

You could change the impedance, by changing resistor and capacitor values, or you could stick a simple op-amp or JFET buffer in front of the circuit

By the way, a bit off topic, but do you have any idea about how the name is pronounced? To me it, no offense, sounds a bit like the sound one makes, when he has thrown too many beers down the hatch :b
 
This is the schematic I use, 35Hz Butterworth with input buffer. The input and output decoupling capacitors are smaller than on the schematic, can't remember what value though.

I have it installed in my ART Pro Channel II preamp driving a Peavey IPR1600 PA amp into fEARful 15/6 and or 12/6 dependant upon venue.

It picks up +/- 15v supplies from the ART.

Why not turn down the bass knob on the amp? I have an Orange AD200B and I have heard people say they sound great but complain that they Fart out cabs and don't have a ton of headroom. So I turned the bass knob down. Actually the first amp that I have ever done that on (but it is the BASSIEST amp I have ever played). So anyways, I have more clean headroom because less bass made it more efficient and my speakers don't fart out. It seriously sounds massive with the bass knob at 10 o'clock
 
Depending on the EQ frequency of the bass knob, it may not address the infrasonics that these HPFs are meant to eliminate. Or to the same extent as an HPF, say, -6db vs -12db per octave.
 
yeah, if the bass knob controls the "meat" of the low end, turning it down kills your primary purpose for being there :)

the idea here is to shave off the useless sub-30Hz stuff while leaving the usable bass alone.

No fancy pronunciation, really. Looking to put out a series of pedals under the Bœx name. A good friend of mine who is working with me on these Bœxes (he's providing the hardware, I'm providing the labor) has been given naming priveleges. Discussions about function and somewhat-relevant context lead to the naming.

Lined up:
-- Fæpbœx II/III, which are 2- and 3-band preamps, respectively. Those should be built this week. (Fapbox)
-- Mætbœx, which is will be a copy of the DOD FX32 Meatbox.
-- Fœzzïïbœx, an in-development 4-band adjustable fuzz pedal (I'm pushing for it to be OD) based on the Paia Quadrafuzz.

That sounds way easier, than it is. See the problem is that the meatbox uses an integrated sub-harmonizer chip. While it is possible to find these on ebay, they are limited in quantity an kinda expensive. Trust me, you are not the first person to venture into meatbox-copying but i have yet to see someone succeed. Good luck never the less :)

Yes. Looking to clone the Meatbox. But alas, just before I was planning starting the perfboard layout, we decided to move into a different house.

I had one of those back in the 90s. It wasn't a very good pedal. I took it apart to mod it, and never got it put back together. Then I must have lost it when I moved once. The problem was the way they filter the subharmonics. I bought it new for like $19, so I wasn't too concerned with losing it.

There's a guy who peruses these forums once in a while and maintains a Facebook page who modded one to work pretty damned well. Local (to me) and I've been meaning to hit him up to try it out with intent to buy. Sounds like a drug deal.

If you mod it, it can probably sound pretty good. It has potential. It just didn't any one thing very well.

But I used my EH bass micro synthesizer for sub-octaves instead.
