SpaceX and other space stuff

Bummer though that the video from the drone ship dropped right before Falcon 9 landed. When the feed came back, the rocket had already touched down.

This happens with most landings, actually. Though the doubters claim it's evidence it all was faked, sigh....

Sheesh, some people are lame.
One of the best things for me about the broadcast I watched today was how authentic it was and the raw emotion we saw and heard.
For instance, watching Lauren Lyons from SpaceX talking about the launch right after lift off and then when Falcon 9 successfully disengaged, you could tell she was holding back tears she was so excited and relieved at the same time.
If all this was fake, then a few of those folks I saw today deserve Oscar awards.
Oh, and the tour of the capsule from Bob and Doug with Tremor was way cool.

Question for any interstellar optical experts out there... In the camera shots in darkness of the Dragon approaching the ISS (with stars, galaxies and planets in the background), when the camera moves to center the Dragon image on the screen, the stellar background DOESN'T move. Why??? And no, I'm not proposing any conspiracy theories.

I think it's just that it's too far away, linear / lateral movement isn't going to cause it to (apparently) move, they'd need to turn / spin for that to happen.

I suspect that the star field is artificial (or from an optical beam splitter), so that when the camera looses the craft, the complete blackness of space isn't mistaken for a camera malfunction, and vice versa.

I hope NASA doesn't elbow into this thing to the point were innovation takes a backseat.

I really don't think that is going to happen. This is a new world under Jim Bridenstine. As long as he is in charge, I think this will be a non-government constrained ride. Just look at the path of all of this. They moved Very quickly to allowing this DEMO2 mission. NASA will pour their knowledge into this, but they won't kill the innovation. That's my story, and I'm sticking with it. :)

That's what I initially thought but after 4 or 5 or more moves the background was still the same. Same stars at the periphery/edges of the screen in the same locations.

Hmmm. Possible I guess. Not sure I buy that because the Dragon never completely left the frame. Dragon's beacon and running lights were at least partially visible the whole time. Oh sweet mystery of optical illusion. :D

Well, this is NASA's thing. They're buying a ride from SpaceX for astronauts and cargo like we did from the Russians. SpaceX's other ventures have essentially nothing to do with NASA other than possibly cooperating on moon or Mars missions. Other government involvement with SpaceX would be getting launch clearance from the FAA and maybe a couple other gov agencies as is done for SpaceX satellite launch missions.

Pretty sure it did completely leave frame a couple of times though.

That camera wasn't installed for this mission - it's covered many previous docking manoeuvres, and will be utilised in future docking manoeuvres : you can't guarantee it will always be in frame, so just because it might not have been needed on this occasion...


But that may not be the reason for an artificial star field anyway : could be an optical reference for range finding purposes, after the fact???

Could be a way of forensically analysing the crafts attitude (against telemetry data) after the fact???

Re: the "star field" that isn't moving, it most likely isn't a star field. For the camera to expose correctly to see the capsule clearly, the stars wouldn't be visible. However, digital cameras can exhibit a phenomenon called "hot pixels," which are individual pixels in the optical sensor that malfunction, and read at their highest available level. One of the signs of a hot pixel is that it doesn't move in the frame relative to the sides. On a black background, hot pixels can look like stars.
