SpaceX and other space stuff

Showin' my geek flag...

Right before the Spacex SN9 crash, there was a sequence from a camera that looked almost directly below the ship. It wasn't, but that was a cool dramatic angle to me. Starts at 6:37 in the clip below.:


The geek in me was reminded of a scene from Battlestar Galactica when Adama did the "Adama Maneuver" with the Galactica.:


Anyway, really excited about the Perseverance landing. And that helicopter. Just wow. I still check on the Curiosity rover in Gale Crater for images and location. Still going strong since landing in Aug of 2012.
 
“NASA has been exploring Mars since Mariner 4 performed a flyby in July of 1965, with two more flybys, seven successful orbiters, and eight landers since then,” Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, said in a statement on January 27. “Perseverance, which was built from the collective knowledge gleaned from such trailblazers, has the opportunity to not only expand our knowledge of the Red Planet, but to investigate one of the most important and exciting questions of humanity about the origin of life both on Earth and also on other planets.”

I remember reading about Mariner 4 when it happened. (In my "Weekly Reader"!) :D

That speed of 48,120 miles/hour is mind blowing. 802 miles in 1 minute. 13.4 miles in one second.

Now I gotta go walk my dog at about 5 feet per second LOL
When I start tracking this online, it was traveling in excess of 70,000 mph! Apparently it slows down in its elliptical orbit. Science, I guess.

Here's a neat animation of Perseverance starting about 1000 miles high, 2,250 miles from landing site, about 17 minutes to landing. All done in real time (1 sec = 1 sec).

You can zoom in/out, rotate view. Landing site is marked on the planet. Interestingly, the craft isn't pointed at the landing site. Heading adjustments start after atmospheric interface.

Altitude, distance, speed, and times to milestone events at lower left. Lower right has different controls, such as speeding up from real time. I enjoyed watching Mars move serenely below me, though, so kept it real time LOL.
