Speaker alignment delay

No it wouldn't do what the OP is looking for, I'd venture a guess ... nothing would.

What the OP is trying to to is delay the sound coming from the speaker that is nearer to the listener. This makes it so that the sound from the nearer speaker, and the sound from the farther speaker arrive at the listener at the same time. This process is called "time-allignment", and there is a specific device that is used for this purpose. That device is a delay.

Thats why they're called "delay zones". Of course you cant delay a speaker to each patron, but you can create zones within the venue where delay times are very, very closely alligned. Large venues might have upwards of 15 delay zones.

It's a practice that's been in place for a very long time.

Just a question, when you go to a concert, do you just run around throughout the whole show, or do you stop and take a breather once in a while?

A point to ponder, that will "work" only if you stand in one place. In what Live venue is that ever going occur?

Actually ponder this: without delay, the effect will be audible anywhere the direct sound of both sets of speakers can be heard over the ambient reflections. So anywhere in the room where you can hear the center speaker and one of the side speakers at the same time, the effect will be present. The distance between the two sets of speakers will determine whether the effect is manifested as phase-cancellation/comb-filtering or an audible delay.

Alignment is done all the time in professional multi-speaker array systems. These systems by the way will never have a BBE Sonic Maximizer, which serves a different purpose entirely and really only benefits smaller systems without subs.

All this is speculative. I'm totally guessing here that, the OP's PA system is a hodge-podge of gear, which was likely never properly engineered. And all the electronic "fixes" in the world, would never be able to overcome. I'm not saying that it's any ones fault or degrading anybody. In the real world unlimited budgets, are a dream and sometimes we have to roll with what we got.
As far as going to a concert is concerned, They got rid of festival seating ages ago here, so I usually try and buy seats that are in a decent spot. At local shows, where it's a bit less constrained I'll usually wander a bit till I find a good spot.

Voice Review - September 2001
"Not only did the bass sound tighter, the high frequencies seemed to exude more clarity than they previously did. This plugin does exactly what it claims to do."

Wow. How long did it take you to put that together? Sorry, but I can't get behind a product whose manufacturer can't manage to explain what it does.

Is there a device out there that can add delay to a speaker for under $100? I know a dbx driverack can do it, but they can get really pricey unless you get a used one, and even then they're almost $300 most of the time.

The dbx DriveRack does not, to the best of my knowledge, offer delay options when dealing with coordination of proximal and remote enclosures. What is does, though, is provide discrete delay amongst the different driver components (to an extent) when used in either a bi-amped or tri-amped configuration...a matter of milliseconds amongst HF, mid, and LF. The DRPA manual is somewhat vague but the process becomes more evident when programming the DriveRack.

FWIW, the BBESM does almost the same thing with two fixed crossover points and delays. BBE quoted me values for both but danged if I can find them.

Afterthought: there is a process for setting up proximal mains / remote mains / subs, all with time delay alignment, utilizing the DRPA. I'll draft the procedure and post Sunday. That little two watt light bulb lit up above my ahead after my intial post.

Right. Whether or not the OP has a hodge-podge of crap hung up with bailing wire or a million dollar line-array, the techniques described here are applicable, and when implemented correctly, will improve the listening experience. This will get him more gigs and p**sy.

Hi, I don't really appreciate you spamming the thread with all this advertisement for a piece of junk. Please cease and desist.

Some people could call what we use for PA gear as a "hodge podge", I can see that. We used to be in a building where the speakers were all properly aligned and we didn't have any issues with delay or phase.

Then, due to financial constraints, we had to move to a building where the only feasible locations for the speakers left us with speakers that are rather far apart. If I can fix that with a $50 delay unit? I'm sold.

Sound is all about compromise...

And how many of those magazines Don't have ads for BBE?

I don't know what you are using for a mixer but if you are planning on upgrading soon the Peavey FX series has the delay feature built in. I'm pretty sure the presonus studiolive als o has this feature but it is alot more money.

Either of those would be a downgrade for us. We have a $10,000 Roland V-Mixer. We don't plan on upgrading any time soon. Hopefully if we ever do we can get the next level up in the series, which has delay and a whole gob of other amazing features.
