Speaker size characteristics

You're saying that there are two drivers with identical parameters in every way, except for the nominal cone diameter? I find this hard to believe, and something I think I've seen you comment about here on TB... While I agree that If anyone knows the answer to that it would be you, I can't say that I'm prepared to bite into my Adidas just yet... Although with a little hot sauce they might be delicious.

If there is some oddball example somewhere, I'd be interested to see it. You change one spec, it affects the others.

I'll be marinating my shoes now.:D

With the thousands of drivers out there you'll find many examples that are. Most musical instrument drivers fall within a fairly small range where Fs, Qes and Qms are concerned. The only spec that used to routinely differ along with cone size is Vas, but even that has radically changed since the introduction of neos.

True, but, for instance, if a larger cone of the same material results in a higher Mms you can just use a different cone material to get the Mms of a fifteen the same as that of an eight, or vis-versa.

Cabinet size has a LOT to do with the sound of the cab...perhaps even more than your speaker size. Ported vs sealed has been something I see a lot of difference in, but that is also sort of related to cabinet size as well.

My 2x15's is quite large compared some others, ranking in at about the size of an Ampeg 8x10 cabinet, if not larger. It's ported, which lends to the incredibly large size of the cabinet. A 4x10 cabinet has more cone space, but I guarantee that my 2x15 will go lower than most sealed 4x10s because of its size and porting. I did replace the speakers with Eminence Legend 15's not long ago, so that definitely has an effect on it as well.

But to muddy the waters just a bit, I do have an Avatar 2x10 with the newer neo drivers and while it gets VERY loud, I notice it breaking up sooner than my 2x15s does. I don't know if that's related to speaker size or just cabinet size, but I know the speakers in the Avatar are probably higher quality than my Legends are.

I guess I was thinking more mechanical specs. For example, if cone sizes are different yet Vd is the same, excursion can't be and vice versa. Different masses would have to be used to end up at the same fs, etc. Yeah, you could make thrm to have the same on-axis response...at least at lower or test power levels.

I don't think there's an electric bass ten made today that can come close to the on-axis high frequency response of the EVM 15L. And I can name a dozen tens that will go lower and louder than the EVM 15L. It ain't the size that matters, it's how you build it.

I've played the 15L and no, there isn't a 10 that can do that on the high end.

So, whaddya think? 'Bout an hour and a half at 325 on the shoe or do I need to start the grill?

Let's assume that the bigger diameter driver will have proportionately higher sensitivity, so we're just looking to match the shape of the response curve in the frequency range where cone breakup and beaming are not occurring.

The bigger cone will have more mass. Other parameters can be adjusted to compensate for the change in mass: A stiffer suspension and higher magnetic field. If you get close to the mark with off the shelf parts, you can fine tune the suspension with the box volume, and the magnetic field with the DC resistance. This only neglects the small effect of coil inductance.

Similar tricks are possible for matching systems with different numbers of drivers.

The electromechanical parameters and the Thiele-Small parameters are just different views of the same thing.

Well, response would mean the whole response, including breakup modes, peaks, valleys, etc. on axis, but yeah...I can't argue with you guys.:)

Is it possible that I am the only one who is tired if this silly (spelled STUPID) debate? TB used to be intelligent and refined. Now it seems to be filled with arguments. Maybe I can get a refund.

Has this become the bass players facebook? I wonder.

Maybe, but you cant be tired, maybe just bored

what do you want to talk about?......... speakers?

man i was wondering why everyone was being so nice at the beginning for such a dead horse as this one , then I realized how ancient it was.
