Speaker size characteristics

Every time these discussions come about you get people pulling fearful out their butt like it's some great new thing. It is great, it's not new. A bass player stood up straight and got his knuckles off the ground and built the system that should have been done a long time ago, using principles that have existed for 40 years. Is it clean, accurate loud and flat? Hell yes. Is it what everyone wants? Not likely. In my opinion it's the way to go, but all these bandwagoneers drive me nuts.

First of all, the fEARful designs are voiced too. They are just voiced closer to what a lot of good PA stacks are voiced like before some bad engineer muddles it all up. But the cabs voicing still veers toward characteristics a lot of bass players seem to like. It's a hybrid in a way, and made to be flexible. If it wasn't good there wouldn't be so many people of divergent tastes and approaches finding satisfaction with them.

Second, there seems to be a lot of whining around here if a fEARful users should ever post. It's all right if Mesa or or GenzBenz or Ampeg or Bergantino or whatever fans carry on in many many many posts a day, but god forbid someone who appreciates their fEARfuls should ever post. Sure, sometimes someone will seems a little over the top, but I'm seeing that from supporters for many other brands as well. A lot of people around TB could arguably get a lot more low-key. Until then, the paltry amount of fEARful posting from users shouldn't be a problem for anyone, should it?

Understand that a lot of fEARful guys feel defensive about continuously getting singled out or trolled. They don't like having different unspoken rules applied to them than people who are supporting other choices. To them it's disheartening to be told they should "ride in the back of the bus". Why should fEARful users and builders be content to be second-class citizens of TB? Getting trolled or implying they should shut the f up is just that's something that'll drive some types of people to be all the more vociferous.

All that nonsense about bandwagons. Any commercial bass gear manufacturers who get touted in hundreds of posts a day here and enjoy worldwide sales might be a better target if you are so worried about "bandwagons".

And get offa my lawn.

I could be wrong, but I think a lot of the fEARful backlash may have to do with how trendy on TB it has become. And to be honest, a lot of gear trendiness does take place here, where people are like, "OMFG!!!!1!!!11! This cabinet is the best cabinet in the world!!!!11!!!!11"; and then, a year or so later, the TB community has moved onto the next big thing. The Kustom Groove Bass head and Avatar cabs are two examples that come to mind. I don't think Kustom makes that head anyore, so it's understandable why people don't talk about it as much; however, people don't rave and rave about Avatar like they did five years ago. I owned an Avatar, and while I thought it was an alright cab, I definitely didn't think it lived up to the hype. People were comparing them to top of the line Eden and SWR stuff, which it wasn't on that level, IME. :hmm:

After the hype dies, fEARful can go one of two ways on here: It can be largely forgotten as TBers move onto the next thing, or it can be recognized as truly good gear and find its place amongst other time-tested TB favorites likes the Mesa Walkabout and the Tech21 VT pedal.

With that said, I'd really like to try a fEARful cab. :ninja:

You'll find PhanBoi's in all shapes and sizes around here, gushing about a wide range of their favorite bits and pieces.

If you have a point to make-*and this applies to ANY and ALL of you!*:
make it politely; make it reasonably.
Re-read Rule one, and the General Terms Of Service you agreed to when you signed on here;
and then behave as though we're all friends, bass players, here to converse, share information and hang out civilly.

If y'all don't: I and the rest of the Mod Staff will be glad to come in here and make sure you do.

OK?

There's no need to twist and bend statements to make whatever point you care to make.

Thanks!

here's how the K120 and K130 compare specs-wise:

MODEL FS QTS QMS -QES -VAS --EFF --PE --XMAX --RE --LE ----SD ----BI -MMS FLUX

K120 --50 0.2 ---4 --0.21 121.8 -6.9 --100 --1.52 ---6.3 -0.6 --0.053 --18 --35 --1.2

K130 --40 0.25 --4 --0.27 297.3 -6.7 --125 --0.76 ---6.3 -0.6 --0.090 --18 --60 --1.2

Either those specs are wrong or you are.

If it has twice the xmax it's not the same motor.

edit: I have been asked to rephrase this. We are also apparently now using a definition for 'motor' that has no moving parts, standard use in every AES paper I've ever seen (not to mention common sense) notwithstanding.

So yeah, depending on how you want to define 'motor', and how you want to define 'wrong', something may or may not be amiss with those figures.

also: John, I think you are beautiful delicate flower and prince amongst men. With a bitchin' amp collection.

cheers

Well My apologies Chef if anything i have said is out of line....it just get frustrating to me...why cant we all just get along and respect each others differences!! So i like fEARful or so you like CabX...it is not a hill to die on!! Thankx for all the Work you do BTW i am sure you get more frustrated then i !

Sure, but if you are using a totally different voice coil it's not the same motor anymore.

i agree. i have no idea why the xmax is different since OC speaker told me that they used the same voicecoils in them. only the cone size and speaker baskets are different sizes.

I would guess it's a typo or mistake. I think I found the same spec sheet you got those numbers from and it looks a whole lot like a hastily compiled list of drivers from all sorts of different era's. I don't think T/S numbers were widely used (if at all) when engineers were designing and factories were producing those speakers.
