Speaker wasted

Not sure if I'm in the right place here. Tonight at rehearsal I noticed that the paper on my cone was half gone! The bottom half seems to have just fallen off! Still sounds good but more distorted. It's, far as I know, an EV (15"). Is having it repaired an option? In 20 years this has never happened. Better to just get a new one? It's a 2x15, 4 ohm cab.

IF it is a EV speaker just have it reconed. Basically becomes a new speaker as all the wear parts get replaced, but you don't have to pay for the metal basket and magnet (saves a lot of cash).

Check with Music stores and professional sound companies for speaker repair in your area. Otherwise shipping off to someone like Orange County Speaker will be needed.

You may want to also check with Great Plains Audio. They are former JBL & Altec folks and I've always been pleased with their work and prices are reasonable. Link Removed in Oklahoma.

What do you mean by paper falling off? The cone itself? Or the edge surround? If the cone is intact but the surround is torn, you can save even more money and just get it re edged. It is usually more of an issue with foam surrounds like cerwin vega type, but I think paper surrounds can be re edged too. Ocs does that and it is considerably cheaper than a full recone. They even sell kits you can do it yourself and save even more money.

The center of the speaker is good, the black paper between the center cone and the outside metal, on the bottom side, is simply gone.

So the dome and the rest of the cone is fine, but the paper on the edge that couples the cone to the edge has deteriorated? If so there's a good chance you just need it re edged. Just the lossnof a chunk of surround can make it fart, there is always a chance there is other damage, but jbl voice coils can easily outlast the edge surround.

IMPORTANT - DON'T KEEP USING IT - ! Without the proper suspension, the rest of the cone support can get damaged. even the voice coil. Also- air is coming out the gap, so both drivers may be moving too far. Keep an eye on the second 15 - if it is the same age, it is likely to need repair soon as well.

Exactly my thoughts too. In the OP's position i'd have both the drivers looked at.

815 is the manufacturer's code for Telex era EV production, so I tend to think it is. ;^}

And no, don't use the cab unless it's loaded fully and correctly.

That speaker will give me nightmares tonight, that is not natural. Do not sleep to close to it, it might do something.
Next stop for it is a speaker shop to get re-coned. I have done it a few times with old speakers it is cheaper than new and you get the same performance.
