Speakers suggestion for a 2x10" cab "5-strings bass" oriented

The midrange chamber is slightly less than 6 liters so I think it should be ok.
The problem is the availability of those two drivers that are not imported here in Italy.
I think the 18 Sound 6ND410 could be good, it would be cut around at 600/700 Hz 18 dB/oct.
I saw it's used with the fEarful...

Hi Roberto, I'd stick with 18, unless you have some crossover design understanding. My mid chamber is more like 2.5 liters so thinbgs are entiely different not even taking into consideration the woofers in box.

Also you are going to have to pad back the 18 Sound a lot. I can get away with little or no padding with two 3012LF, but if I recall your drivers, more padding will be needed.

Well...I'm not an expert with crossover designing but I'm pretty experienced with electronics so it's not a complete "jump on the dark" (as we use to say here).
I've made some simulation using a software which results are useful just to point you in the right direction.
At first I want to try to use only the high pass filter leaving the BP102s "free" and listen to the results.
If I'm happy with them then I will have been a very lucky man eheh otherwise I will start with corrections and tests...

I had a look at the impedance graph and the values can get down to 2,7 ohm around at 1 kHz with the woofers cut @ 12 dB and the midrange @ 18 dB.
The cut frequency is 600 Hz, but increasing it to 800 Hz doesn't significantly affect the resulting impedance value.
Is there a way to avoid those tough load considering that my head can stand a minimum load of 4 ohm? Would that "2,7 ohm" result in a probable distortion?

Yes I'm doing simulations with a 2 ways xover cut @ 600 Hz (Butterworth).
The phase at the cut frequency is -79 degree for woofers and -10 for the midrange.
If I switch to a 12 db/oct also for the midrange then the phase at the cut freq. is almost the same of the woofers, with just some degree of difference.
If I change the kind of filter to a Linkwitz-Riley (both filters set at 12 dB/oct) the phase is the same as with the Butterworth but the resulting impedance is never below 4 ohm.
I tried different combinations, but the best results for phase, impedance and frequency response are with both filters at 12 db/oct.

After reading some articles about passive and active crossovers I realized that probably an active crossover would be the best option to have the best performance from the cab.
Obviously I need a further amplifier (the one that I currently own is a single channel) and I'm thinking about building one using Coldamp modules (www.coldamp.com).
It will be equipped with a 2-way 24 dB/oct. active crossover but I was wondering:
is 24 dB/oct slope too high? Would the transition between woofers and the midrange be too "quick"?


PS: if I won't get any answer before the New Year's Eve I wish you all a happy new 2011 !

The first time I tested the cab was without the mid so it sounded good, with plenty of bass but (obviously) pretty "dark".
Now I tried it with the midrange (and the passive crossover cut at 600 Hz, 12 dB/oct) and it is totally another world !
I just tried it at home at the moment so I don't consider it a "real world" test but that 6ND410 sounds really clean and bright, I don't miss a tweeter at all.
Eventhough you can't properly call it a "light cab" those speakers were a very good choice so I must really thank all of you who pointed me in the right direction.

Of course I have...they are all very clever and famous musicians, they can play from rock to jazz, pop and also classic with rare ability.
They started playing a "trash genre" and as long as they were getting famous they went on making their crazy music but they turned their lyrics from trivial to intelligently ironic ones.
Nevertheless they kept the fun.
I consider Faso (the bassist) one of the best italian bassists, if not the best (there is also another one called Saturnino that is a phenomenon).
How did you get to know them? I ignored they were known also there....

I used to work online with a software developer in Napoli who discovered I was a musician - and a Frank Zappa fan like he was. He brought over a CD when we met at a developer conference here in the states. Later I tried to get more but nobody here in the states knew anything and search engines weren't pulling up much. This was before online music was so profligate.

So next time we met at a trade show he traded me a few more CDs. Unfortunately all but the original CRACCRACRICCRECR later were stolen and I've been meaning to hunt some more of their stuff down. I agree that Faso is stone cold blast to hear!

What are 18 Sound prices like for you there in your local economy, compared to other drivers like Eminence anyway?

I payed my BP102s 72 Euro each (about 94 US$) and the 6ND410 79 Euro (about 104 US$) with 30% discount.
Generally speaking 18 Sound speakers cost more than Eminence but the quotation can vary (obviously) from reseller to reseller.
Considering only the pricelists, 18Sound are more expensive than Eminence here.
Also B&C speakers (another italian brand, the company is close to where I live) are pretty expensive if compared with Eminence.
B&C speakers were my first choice (10NW64) but they costed almost twice and don't have the low end extension of the BP102s.

A question: I can't find corners with the internal angle NOT rounded and since corners of my cab are not rounded (I don't have any tools to do that), does a corner with the internal angle of 90° exist? If it exists, where can I find it?
I used those "rounded" but the effect on the corners are not so good.

PS: I'm a software developer too...
