Some things are scary and fun at the same time!!
At one point in the past I had hoped to build a scroll bass-inspired something, probably an electric mandolin (have since learned that, so far, mandolin is not my instrument). For the scroll I toyed with the idea of centering, say, a 1/4" dowel in to a hole drilled lengthwise into a 3/4" dowel, and then center that into a larger, maybe 1-1/4" dowel, and then gluing that into a hole through the headstock. I never got past the point of just thinking about it.

Ok, I’m thinking I can make this work. Hopefully the truss rod arrives today.
Those scroll-style headstocks are just so cool. I'm really glad there are people keeping the scroll bass style "alive" and well, it's such a unique design and deserves attention.
I wouldn't say 'easy' but if I were to do it a couple more times (and I have no intention) I think I could get it down.
Ordered the truss rod from Stewmac the end of last month.. still not here, out in USPS limbo between here and Columbus OH.. five hours away....

With USPS, there’s no telling where it physically is. I sometimes think they have their own private black hole, called “In transit...”, into which packages disappear for a few days, only to pop out very near their destination on their last day of travel....

So I glued up the walnut top when it arrived, and rough cut it to the pickguard shape... Not convinced. I could inlay it as a top but then I'd need back access for the controls.. I could router-sled it thinner (my only option for that) but I'd worry about it falling apart.
You know, if the body was painted an off-white or cream, and the walnut pickguard were to darken with a finish, that would look quite stunning.

Oh yeah, I really like that! The walnut will darken quite a bit under a finish. I’d thin it down to maybe 0.25”, smooth the corners and edges, and run with it!

Me? I’d glue it on and rear-route for controls. But I’m funny that way....
Nice, I had considered doing a walnut pick guard on one that I’m building, but decided to go slightly different direction. Yours is looking great!
I made up this AMUB-2 with a walnut-faced pickguard. This was plain-back walnut veneer epoxied down onto 1/16" black Garolite sheet. The Garolite is really strong structurally, and is easily machined.
If you want to make your walnut into a removable "pickguard", you need to reinforce the back somehow. Epoxy it down to a Garolite sheet, or an aluminum sheet. Or, coat the back with epoxy and a cloth like carbon fiber or fiberglass. Some kind of thin reinforcement. Then, fasten it down to a flat board and use a router sled to thin it down.
