Special Edition Build off - Build em if ya got em

Boy the peer pressure is huge. All the cool kids are doing it and here I'm stuck doing 10-14 hr days with no end in sight. I'm looking through some crap and seeing what I can cobble together in off hours so I can play too. :woot:

Beej,

After coming to understand the work you do, your work is more important.

I really want to apply the peer pressure in your case, but that would just be in bad taste

For those that want to rename your thread, here's how you do it

1) Go into Edit on the very first entry of your thread
2) A form will pop up, and at the bottom, there will be a button "More Options" click it
3) This will take you to a form where you can rename your thread.

If this doesn't help, let me know

You're on the front lines. I can't imagine being in your position or anybody's in health care right now. It's hard enough as it is right now with our work (or lack thereof). We are considered "essential" and every person's home we go into, we wear PPE and set up containment. I don't have a physical job anymore, but trying to scope and estimate jobs is challenging enough (using a touch screen with gloves lol).

Not to derail, but a big thanks to Beej and all the other healthcare and essential workers here!

Dang! I can't play :( My project has 6 strings but they're too thin. But I was going to tune it BEADGC and play it through an octave pedal. I'm just using what I have to make a 6-string bass...ish. How else am I supposed to learn Thundercat songs? But noooooooooo, you've got your string gauge restrictions. I think the best I could do with the neck I have (25.5") is .056.

Well...I'll build it by myself. More practice with social distancing. Right, guys? Right?

:crying:

Please count me in too....my original post has got deleted somehow.
Here's my stalled project:
Winter Build Off 2018 - 54 P bass inspired 5 String

Does anyone know how I rename the title of my stalled project? Currently it's titled as a winter build off 2018....a long time ago...and several houses ago too...

After wrestling with a title edit failure...I've stared a new thread here: Special Edition Build Off - 54 P bass inspired 5 String Restart

Can I be added to the official list please kind sirs!

I have a .115 tape wound on my 25.5" scale build from last year tuned to E standard, Diadario has guitar strings up to atleast .115, if you aren't using a tailpeice.

Man, I envy you guys with your shops at your house. While I'm stuck at home I can't make any progress on my build because the wood shop I will use is 2 hours away at my boss's house. And to top it off, I can't even work on my refinishing projects (I swirl paint guitars) because I do most of it outside and it just won't stop raining her in the Pacific Northwest. :meh:

TLDR: Worst. Quarantine. EVER!!!!

You have a kitchen, right?! Throw down a drop cloth... instant workshop!

I’m trying not to start another one again. However, I have parts that need some use. Flame maple, bubinga, mahogany for neck blank, mahogany for body, rosewood for fretboard, piezo bridges, truss rod and a set of tuners I was going to give away. And I don’t have a fretless bass. So.... I’m surfing for ideas for a fretless bass with 0€ costs.

Really? That'd be great! Is your your instrument 4 or 6 string? I was a little worried about how floppy a string tuned to b at that scale length would be.

It's a 4 string, but I've taken it down to C without it getting too floppy, if you go down below that I'd drill out the bridge or use a custom tailpiece and use a bass .130, the main problem is that above the 5th fret it doesn't sound great. At this scale, it's a trade off between a decent low end and a decent high end. I'm planning on doing a 28" scale 6 string tuned CGDAEB with a .120 for the C.

Open for discussion

In past build offs, there are always comments that there aren't enough votes.
One person suggested we create categories for voting

I was going to wait for this summer to open discussion on catagorized voting, but I think now is a good time.

I was looking at the list of 28 builds, and I've loosely classified these into 3 categories
Parts Builds
Finish builds
New Builds

Right now, the distribution is pretty even across these 3

Question
Do we want to set up voting for categories, and if we do, how do we do it?
