So I could list all entries on a single voting thread, but there's no guarantee that each individual would put 3 votes in each category. they might put all 9 votes in 1 category.

I could set up the voting, give people 3 votes, 1 for each category

I could create 3 separate voting threads, but that could get confusing.

I'm sure we'll get more suggestions

Yeah, I would say to go with the 3 voting threads. Title them identically aside from the category designation. I think it's the only way you'll ensure that the votes get distributed properly. But I guess it would not guarantee that every voter votes in each category.

By the way, thanks for heading all of this up again. You do a great job of organizing these build offs! :thumbsup:

I'm kicking around the idea of making an entry, but trying to finish up a couple of guitar builds at the moment. So, I'll have to see how my schedule works out.

I feel like there's a bunch of fun ways you could break down voting. You could do it by category as you mentioned, or even come up with special awards (most creative, best first-timer entry, etc.) But regardless of if, or how, it gets broken down, it's going to be a good time for all! I think at some point you have to balance complexity and potential confusion among voters against the desire to make it more interesting.

I think even if you broke it up into the three categories you mentioned, you could still potentially just have one big voting thread with X votes per person, and then after the fact sort out the entries into categories and see who won each category. Votes may not get split evenly across categories but you would still end up with someone in each category that had the highest number of votes for that category.

I'm not sure how much effort we want to put into this, but there are a lot of third party voting platforms that could probably handle things better than this software. I've participated in voting on other forums where the actual vote mechanism is on openvote or even surveymonkey and the forum thread for voting just has a link to it. Of course, you need some degree of integration to check logins or emails if you want to keep people honest about only voting once, so that may rule these options out for us.

Honestly though I really think it's going to be a good time, and perfectly effective, regardless of how complicated we make it. Categories and such would be fun, but it's pretty fun as-is as well.

The best of show concept would definitely be part of the mix. Maybe the best 3 out of each catagory.

Just got an idea for voting in a 2 phase approach

Phase 1 - Open voting for the different categories. This voting done in LC only. Keep voting open for a week. Separate thread for each category.
Phase 2 - Take the top 50% (or so) from each group from Phase 1 and open voting to all of TalkBass. This would be our 2 week voting window

I would do top 3 from each category for phase 2 but that sounds like a good idea.
