Yikes, that whole area is sort of infill-ish, ain't it? My inlaws live right closeby there...wonder if the Walmart across the street is at any risk too?

We're in a pandemic, Walmart was never not going to be a risk, sink holes or not!
Sorry for the lack of updates. Things have been a little busy with a lot of moving things around and painting.
I do, however, finally have some spray paint
turns out Rona is less busy than Home Depot and even more so about 30 minutes before they close on a Sunday.
I also got a little something in the mail. A very little something, five of them!
I found these itty bitty tiny miniature hand planes on eBay. After noticing that Lee Valley sells them at a large markup and a positive review on YouTube, I bought the full set of five knowing well that only 2-3 would be useful. These are made by Mujingfang and the plane in the picture took that cut and made that chamfer right out of the box. Cuts nicer after a good sharpening of course. I also have a full-size set of three Japanese style planes from the same brand on the way. If I'm gonna be home all summer I'm gonna buy and learn new tools!

I have their hong kong style high angle smoothing plane, it's a great plane for the price. Tricky to set up, but when set up well and sharp will smooth the curliest most tear-outable wood.
Did you find it needed a lot of work to flatten? The mini planes were very close to flat right out of the box so I'm optimistic that the larger ones will be relatively close too.
I'd love a set of ibex planes but they are so astonishingly expensive I can't see myself ever owning them. If these are even remotely comparable I might try them. I think I see the set of 5 mini planes you're talking about being sold at a few different eBay merchants for around $60. I am not sure if I'm seeing the larger ones or the smoothing plane. Can you guys link to them here?

For whatever reason they don't ship to Canada anymore. From that particular seller they took a little under a month to get to me.
Here's the larger ones from the same manufacturer, I bought them yesterday so I don't expect they'll be here for about the same amount of time:

I must be some sort of super sleuth digging up sellers that don't ship to Canada, because that one is also marked as "Does not ship to Canada" after I purchased. Weird!

They have two of the five miniature planes as well! Mind you they're much more expensive at lee valley but at least you don't have to wait for them to show up
Finally got a spray test done using the method @Beej proposed, and I think it turned out nicely on my test piece. I set the height of the hovering template at around 1/4" off the surface and sprayed at an angle a bit below 45°.
Pleasant surprise - the white paint that was purchased for me by a family member who happened to go to the hardware store isn't perfectly white as evidenced by the printer paper my tester was set on...
I figure it'll match the whitened maple more nicely than a pure white, and probably cut down on some of the relatively intense contrast between the purple and white. Just gotta muster up the courage to paint the real article now!

Kind of hard to photograph. The burst turned out nicely, if a little further in from the edge than I wanted. Being that the guard is cupped upwards slightly, I had some trouble getting even coverage but I think it turned out nicely. Pay no attention to the crack in the veneer
I hit the top of the guard with a coat of wipe-on poly. I can't tell if it just filled the pores, or wiped away some of the white paint I washed the whole thing with, but a lot more of the wood colour comes through now. It also revealed how uneven my spray painting is 
Anyways, given the amount of time left in the Build-off, and the fact that this my first pickguard, my first burst, and my first colour wash on an instrument... I'll leave it as is. I think it looks pretty good but I wasn't sold on it until I saw it under natural light:

Had to test for fitment to be sure everything was going to work, as you can see it's a little tight
The angle of the photo makes it look like it has more clearance than it really does.
Anyways, I couldn't actually find my last barrel jack over the last few days so I went back to the front jack I had originally planned for.
Still uncertain about the red knobs. The only other option at this point might be black or silver based on what I have in my parts boxes.
Wiring is going to be tight!
