Since Fender came out with a less than desirable MIM Waters model I was wondering if they are planning to release a MIA Gilmour model in tribute to the bass lines he laid down on 85% of the tracks? Not saying Roger doesn't deserve it 'cause he is a great lyrist, but David should get one as well for the music. Happy Birthday - David.

Now, I should say these guys are great musicians and when we show up, everyone REALLY KNOWS their stuff. There is no half ass knowing anything, it is CD perfect (Covers).

That is part of being a pro in my mind, there is nothing worse or that gets on my nerves more than when you show up at a practice and you know your stuff inside and out and someone says "Hmm, maybe we should listen to it". No, maybe you should have spent the time I did learning your part, to not to is disrespectful, like your time is more valuable than mine?

Not crazy at all... I have played gigs that way. I pride myself on that ability

I agree come prepared.

Every band is different but be professional for sure

Ha! It's funny you say that because when I looked up who played bass on the majority of Floyd songs that have a killer bass line, a good amount of time, it was David Gilmour.

He plays the fretless part of "Hey You," he plays bass on "Pigs (Three Different Ones)." Should I keep going? :) It wouldn't be a Fender though since I heard stories of Gilmour using a MusicMan Stingray but I don't know how true that is.

Sorry, big Pink Floyd fan. Carry on :D

Agreed ! I do a lot of fill in shows , no practice for those . Show up and play . So those are about knowing a lot of material , but also being flexible and able to handle something when it gets thrown at you .

I just installed a set of Cobalt Hybrid Slinky's: .045 .065 .085 .105 on my Forte w/ Haz Preamp

I confirmed with Ernie Ball that there was no Nickel in these strings so I ordered a set from Bassstringsonline.com (great price by the way)

Here are my initial feelings.

The Cobalts are crisp and bright.
The Cobalts have very clear low end.
The Cobalts have a bit less lower midrange (but it may just be less muddy)
The Cobalts have tons of sustain.
The Cobalts seemed to have a bit more output.
The Cobalt tension is bit tighter then HiBeams but not as tight as LoRiders.
The Cobalts feel really smooth and balanced.

If you are moving from Nickel to Cobalts they may take a while for you to get accustomed to.

Here are the sound clips for you to listen.
Everything was set identical for both the Cobalt and HiBeams recording.

You should thank me - I came VERY close to trading for that bass a couple weeks ago. :) Enjoy it - it deserves someone who will make it a primary player.

I do love the Bongos, but I just sold one off and will be trading the other shortly for something very tasty. I may get one in the future, but for right now, my Spectors scratch my itch for an aggressive sounding bass, and my SR5 H and and SR5 HH are truer to that "EBMM" sound so I'm hanging on to those. But if I ever found I couldn't play a 35" scale 5-string anymore, I would get a Bongo right away.

Thanks for putting the pin back in on that one, Bunk. This one will definitely be my primary. The wait is killin' me. It should be here by Saturday. I may have to take the week off, just to get acquainted with...

Wow that was awesome to hear an A/B like that! It just seems like the Cobalt's have more presence and are.....like.....there.

I definitely heard more growl from the Cobalt's. Seems like they really had it in the upper mids over the Hi Beams. I totally agree with your assessment on the Cobalt's.

Definitely like what I'm hearing with the Cobalts vs. the HiBeams. We'll see how that compares for me with a pick.

My thing is I'm used to 105 and 85 gauge E and A strings on my Spectors so going to the Cobalts would compromise on that. I have two sets on the way so one set will land on my SR5 HH, the other I'll probably try on the Euro 5 to see how the feel is with the lighter E and A.

Though I just put Fat Beams on that for the first time ever and haven't had a chance to put it through the paces yet.

So for those who might care about my nut saga on the Euro 435, I wound up getting it filed down pretty decently with some "non-standard" tools. I did the drill bit with emery cloth thing on the B and E slot, which was kind of hard to do (and took forever) and I wound up scuffing the truss rod cover a bit. Grrr.

It became apparent this would be too hard to do with the A and D slots so I ran out to Lowes and found a micro diamond file set with a nice rounded file. I should have just started with that to begin with since it was much faster and easier.

It's not the prettiest job and some of the brass coloring wore off the nut in the process, but the bass plays a lot better now. I just need to do some final tweaks with saddle height and I think it's there. I can only imagine how easy it would be with the right tool!

I'd still like to try and get a new pre-cut BEAD brass nut from Spector if possible but if not I can live with this. Just pretty disappointed my setup guy of 17 years turned me down saying he didn't want to use his files on brass. You'd think I was asking to file through a steel can LOL.

I'm with you on this. I was going to order a set to try out but find it odd that they use the .100 for the E string and the .80 for the A string. I am also curious how the .130 fits into the Spector bridges since I have had some issues with other brands and getting them to fit. I accept the fact that I need to crimp the end part that goes into the bridge with pliers in order to get them in but some seem to be easier to do than others.

I have no problems getting DR strings to fit and if they do require any crimping, it doesn't take much to get it to fit. Anything larger though, and I move to tapered which I had to do with my Rebop since I am using a .145 because I tune that bass down a full step.

I almost bought a 4 and a 5 string set of the cobalts today so I could get the .105 and .85 gauges but that would have been a waste of money since these sets aren't cheap. And yes, I use Bassstringsonline.com so they have really good prices already :)
