Well, it's finally here! My new Spector REX5 and it's everything I could have asked for and more. I think it's just bumped my Pedulla off of the top of the list for the best 5 string bass neck I've ever played. This neck is very thin front to back and not very wide either, it's a joy to play from a neck speed standpoint. As you can imagine it is a little neck heavy and will sit at about 3:00 so not a diver but about the same as my Warwick Thumb BO5.
The Holoflash finish is amazing (probably a love it or hate it thing for most people) and has more color to it than any other holoflash I've seen to date. Still working thru the best eq settings on my amps but this thing has a very agressive tone. It can get very mellow and smooth if needed but always has that underlying growl if you dig in. The stock strings aren't to my liking so I will flip those out for DR Black Beauties but other than that he's a keeper!
Of course no pics, no bass so here ya go...

Looks like i am going to permanently mod my Euro running 18 volts. I'm looking to do another route on my Euro though for a battery compartment that will hold two 9 volt batteries. Does anyone know where i can get the battery compartment/control plate for my Spector? I've seen them on USA Spectors, but they don't have these in the Spector store online.

The two battery holder is like $21.00

Stu MAC should have them. Too much trouble imo. I just wraped the second batt in foam and stuck it in the control cavity. It's fine as long as there's no metal to metal contact. It doesn't move around either. Just my .02

I may go this route too. I won't say what happened when i tried the 18 volt mod on my own....lets just say i am pretty sure something was touching inside the control cavity...

Question for the knowledge base:

I bought my NS4CRFM in 1994, when the Czech line was relatively new. The bridge has a matte finish; I don't think I've seen another Spector with this type of bridge. Most of what I see these days are shiny.
Does anyone else have this type of bridge, or know anything about it?

That was the standard bridge for many years . It's also an awesome bridge that doesn't show wear as much .

Is that the bridge that is heavier? the one more like the US bridge? I have that one too, although mine has been refinished..

It's the original SSD bridge. At that time, the USA bridges were exactly the same. Because the previous (and current) USA Bridges were Spector Branded and trademarked, Stuart had to design a new bridge (and he designed it a slightly different and smaller size... 4x1.75 instead of 4x2).

Made of solid brass without an electroplate coating. These are really nice bridges. They won't show wear like the newer brass-zinc allow models do.

If you're gonna be soldering, make sure to get solder wick. It's the handiest thing that most people forget. It'll help you avoid a big mess if you are are novice soldererererererer.

Thanks to all on the warm Spector welcome. I'm having a lot of fun with it right now. With all those everchanging holoflash colors maybe I should join a Cindy Lauper tribute band... on second thought, aint gonna happen!

I did take a peek at the Tone Pump upgrade on the Spector website and at $100 it seems like a pretty good deal. What's the typical Spector culture (pardon my Spector newbieness) on having a bass with this option? Do most consider it an upgrade that does not detract from the value of the bass? I know in the Alembic, G&L or Stingray world it's considered sacrilege to have any preamp other than the original one but not sure what the Spector culture is yet.

The NSCR were all solid colors I believe. All the FM's were trans finish. Most likely flame under the solid colors as well though.
