Honestly, you'll probably drop dead from exhaustion before you remove the clear coat from a Spector (or any instrument, for that matter) with steel wool.

It's true. Great NBD for me! I haven't felt this much bass nirvana in, well........EVAR!!!!
I've been looking for a nice Euro, or something for that matter, to fill the slot between my NS 2A (now gone) and Forte with the Haz (I always feel I have to say that).
I emailed Sam a few days ago and asked him about that beautiful Spector JJ on here for sale (now belonging to mfrstop). He mentioned he might be letting one of his Euro's go and that sent me into a tailspin. Couple days later and BANG! She's mine.
The FedEx guy showed up just in time for rehearsal and she was thrown in to the fire. Once I figured out all the confusing knobsI had it singing. Man, do these Euro's sound sooooo good. I believe Sam's old axe is going to be seeing a lot of gig time. I'm a tool for black basses, especially matte so this one is right up my alley.
Thanks everyone and thanks Sam for taking care of me! I'll be a good caretaker, I promise.

I think he just mean that steel wool will knock off the sheen and turn a gloss finish into matte.

That won't give the same results as a true mat finish, it will quickly wear polish and look terrible.
Just an observation from my use of the mm114 preamp . When the battery gets weak , it starts lacking bass and the treble sounds really brittle and weird .

You're probably right. I used to hit the back of my Ric neck with 0000. I'd have to do it once every couple of months cause it ended up getting shiny again.
