Wow I feel like my rig is pretty lame compared to most of yours. I play through a Fender Rumble 350W 2x10 Combo. It sounds alright just playing in the bedroom and the few times I've taken it to practices. Never played a "gig" with it (Ok, the high school talent show doesn't really count as a gig...). Upgrading to a true amp and cab is something I probably should do eventually... what would you all recommend as a mid-sized and mid-priced rig for someone who doesn't need/can't afford/doesn't have room for a huge 8x10 and high end amp?

craigslist is your friend, young one.

usually you can find old cheap 2x15 on CL. I rocked a couple 2x15 before I made the switch.

In all honesty the older Peavey heads and cabs are awesome... I miss my PV 215. otherwise a 212 of some sort wil l do well for most any gig. The GK 212 NEO cabs sound awesome. Ashdowns are also pretty affordable, especially used.

Keep in mind **most** heads can be made to sound good with a sansamp or MXR pedal.

I use a Fender Rumble 350 combo to jam with our sponsor at his house parties... its not bad. Not my favorite, but not bad \m/

Some people swear by their Trace Elliot, Mesa Boogie and so on. Genz Benz and TC Electronic can be a bit pricey - but if you find something like the RH450 used, it's an awesome amp.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, it looks like I'll be checking my local craigslist regularly and saving up. I'm also looking to add a few more effects, ever since I bought my Source Audio BEF Pro I've been GASing for a Hot Hand (probably not the most useful for most things, but way cool). I'm thinking a good distortion like the MWBD would also be a huge benefit over the built in distortion on the Rumble 350. That and still considering upgrading the electronics in the Rex... so much GAS, so little $$$. :bawl:
That said, I can't really complain. My current set-up is considerably better than most my age, and its working fine for me now. There's just always something a little better out on TalkBass. :D

As for older Peavey stuff, I play through some sort of Peavey head and a Hartke 2x10+1x15 combined cab at my church (the church owns the rig). It sounds pretty good to me, although I've never had much time to really figure it out or try it at higher volumes.

I use an Ampeg PF500 through a 1x15 PF cabinet. I'm probably going to pick up a second cab as well. I can have a full stack when I need it but most of the time a 1x15 is sufficient. Might sound stupid but I will keep one upstairs and one down in my office. The head is bolted down onto the lid so I can just unclip is and move it from cab to cab. :D Love it.

You can stretch your money by pretty much always buying used. And try to pay cash and don't be afraid to haggle. I was in a shop a couple of weeks ago, and the owner was trying to get me to buy an Ashdown 1x15 cab that had been collecting dust in the corner for a year and a half. He just wanted it gone.

2 mesa power house 410's, and a mesa m 2000......to me, spector and mesa boogie are the perfect match. The only amp IMHO that really makes the pre in any bass shine. I found my cabs on CL real cheap and traded my svt 4 pro for the mesa m2000. i honestly couldnt be happier.

Evan, nothing wrong with a Rumble - they are great amps for the money. A guitarded friend of mine who recently took up bass just bought the same amp and a Fiesta Red Squire P-Bass, and both the bass and the amplifier sound good & have a very high "bang for the buck" factor.
When you are ready to upgrade, take a look at some of the combos & mid-size rig offerings from SWR, Eden, Mesa and my personal fave, Phil Jones.

Big Rig (the band I use my Spectors in):

GK 1001RB II > Epifani PS410 or (2) GK NEO 112 II's

Small Rig (my NS-4 does sound great through this rig):

Mesa Walkabout > Mesa Scout 15

I am giving some consideration to an all tube head for the "big rig", such as an Orange, Ampeg, Fender or one of the new tube Mesa heads coming out. However, I'm not sure I wanna drop that kind of coin either.
