Spector really has been tempting me lately... I was sure my next bass would be a Ray, but now I'm doubting it. I really love that growly punch to Spectors. I've heard they're one trick ponies though... is that true? Would I be making the right choice by going Ray? Also, how does the neck width compare?

To be honest, the OBP-1 is the one thing I don't really think i like about this bass. That can be easily changed though but I am giving it a bit more time to give it more of a change.

This pretty much sums it up in a nutshell. It looks like they only used the OBP-1 in the USA bolt-ons for 1 year and then switched to the OBP-2 so I can almost see why. I think I might be a bit spoiled by the EMG BQC i put in my Euro 5LX though so part of me is thinking of throwing that in this bass also.

The neck on my Stingray is quite a bit wider than any of my Spectors, and the feel is worlds apart. You really need to play a Stingray (or a Ray) and a comparably priced Spector to judge for yourself which one you would prefer.
As for making the right choice? - My Stingray is about to get sold to make way for a 4th Spector... ;)

I've used my Spectors for all sorts of genres

I play all type of genres with Spectors. You have plenty of options to choose from. P/J, J/J, 2 DCs or 2 TWs are standard configurations. You can also choose a bunch of different Preamps that fit your taste.

In regard to the neck, I have played Spectors with all types of necks thin front to back thick front to back etc...

After the being in this club for the past year I would say 9 out of 10 people who come here and try a Spector for the first time end up loving them.

The NS-2A has the Korean Haz - and it's quite an aggressive sound. The Legend almost equals it. The NS-2A has a bit more 'bite' I guess. The Legend Custom has the EMG 3-band circuit I think and it's actually quite powerful. I just haven't used the Legend as much. It's not getting the playing time it deserves.

Depends on the style you play, do you dig in with your fingers, or do you have a lighter touch in general? The P/J set up is great, and the more you dig in the better the EMG PUPs respond, depending on your preamp.

That being said, I used my NS-2A today to go through a bunch of songs that require a vast array of tones.

Led Zeppelin - Ramble On - warm but aggressive tone
Santana - Black Magic Woman - thick and warm tone
Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine - more modern and punchy tone
Brown Eyed Girl - warm, rounded tone

Some tunes I would favor the P pickup, some were a blend of P/J and also where on the bass I played - closer to the neck, fatter, warmer tone - closer to the bridge - punchier. This is true of all basses, but with the Spector you get the extra oomph and growl

I used my Rebop for songs like
Maroon 5 - Moves Like Jagger - modern, low punch
Black Keys - Lonely Boy - low end boost, not too articulated
Ben Harper - Steal My Kisses - warm, rounded with a touch of brightness
Green Day - Holiday - edgy, punchy

The Rebop is a different animal - but it still cuts through like a knife if you want it to.

The thing is, the notes sound so much clearer to me - and as one of my friends put it, after hearing the Spector - he said he could hear 'the outside edges of the notes' - there is a certain definition to the Spector tone, no matter what setting, it's there. I don't know how else to describe it, you just have to play one and see if it speaks to you.

Tupac: If you play bass, no matter what tone you need, theres a Spector for you. Rays are amazing basses, but most find they are "one trick ponies." you'll notice that most people sell them to get a Spector. Stay here, chill for a while, we'll help find the right Spector for you.

New Thread, New Pic. This one has those cabs I was talking about in the last thread, with the truck liner finish. This set up is a 810 on a 215. Guitars are using 612s.

Thanks Limaguy for the Rosewood/Pau Ferro comparison pics! I've alway wondered what the close up difference is. It's cool to see that Pau Ferro doesn't open up even after all those years. Would make such a beautiful fretless bass.

delucajohn, dude that new bass kicks major ass. Wow! Hats off goes to husky123's "Big Earl" She's a heart melter...

Good bass tone is...well, good bass tone. Good bass tone makes bad songs sound good. I gave up long ago trying to "cop" the exact bass tone of songs I was covering.

Imagine how much better those old, musty P bass/Ray tracks are going to sound with Spector tone.:hiding:
