SPECTOR® Club - Part 37

I'm sure you already know, but just in case, the black Euro bridge is made from aluminum. The gold is brass alloy. Switching to the black bridge is going to slightly alter your tone. Although with that electronics package you are going to radically change tones anyway, so I guess it wont matter too much. If you like the tone of your gold bridge, I would recommend getting it powdercoated or black oxide treatment.

Yeah. The black bridges definitely add a "ping" factor that the brass/zinc alloy ones don't have. It can be tamed out a bit by the type of strings you have going on.

A bunch of the older Spectors had them too, all 3 of my Korean-made Spectors have them, the NS20004 and NS20005 (both made in mid 1999), and the NS-2A (sometime in the 80s? I should really find out when this was made).

Yeah the ns2a that got me started had them and the amazon euros have them, but the Ian hill didn't.

Pulled the trigger on a REBOP 5 I could NOT pass on .........pictures to follow.....its not exactly what I wanted my first Spector to be but I have heard some of you call it the "gateway" Spector..........

Ive been frustrated trying to grab my first one and I happened to have something someone wanted.....

Congrats Jamie!!! I'm so glad you're getting one. If you decide to mod it at all let me know so I can hook you up. I am so happy for you man. Cant wait for pics!

Well with the obp-1 thats in it and the HZs, i truly think I will go with your setup with dcs or the bqc with the dc's, time will tell.......

Congrats! I know you've been patiently waiting. The Rebop is a wonderful bass. And it is most definitely a gateway Spector. Enjoy, dude! :bassist:

I think you're gonna want to swap out the whole thing. The obp-1 is really brittle on the treble and the hz's may not give you the oomph we've talked about previously. I can help you do a setup like what was on the Lx5 that you wanted but that ended up with chuckles: 40dcs, and the smadder set up or an EMG bqc system. Regardless, as we've discussed in our pm's, I'll help you get a hold of whatever you want at a discount. But just keep it in mind when you get it that if it doesn't sound as good as you'd hoped, it'll be easy to remedy that very quickly. Pay more attention to how it feels, weighs, and plays. If all those are good, then you'll only be a few steps away from getting the tone you want. If you've still got my contact info, call me if and when you're ready and I will set it all up for you (pun intended). I'm so stoked you're finally getting one! What did you end up swapping for it?

Nice one! Gateway or not, ReBop's are solid basses dude. Congrats.

I have a 2001 Rebop and the bass just sounds amazing. Mine originally came with a non trim tonepump and EMG HZ pickups but I ripped that out and put Ina trim pot tonepump and EMG DC's and it sounds even better. It sounded great stock but when I added the DC's, it really brought the bass to life.

I just finished playing my Rebop 5 at my service. I think the Rebop is a really nice alternative to a Cirrus or Ken Smith type of bass. The pickup placement on Rebop certainly produces that nice midrangey tone that folks love so much on Urban Gospel.

I wouldn't call a Rebop a "Gateway Spector" unless you are referring to it as the beginning of an addiction.

These two late model Rebops I acquired were way lighter and way better sounding than the Euro5 I had, of course it had an OBP-1 in it but that was the way it came.

Whoops, I didn't see that Smadder wrote this before I made my last post but what he says is dead on. I have the OBP-1 in my NS-JH5 and really need to get that thing out of the bass since it is very brittle on the treble like he mentioned. I have the treble turned completely down because if I dont, I start to get hiss and the tone starts to make me cringe but that might be a personal thing.

The HZ's aren't bad pickups but I have become a huge fan of the DC's and have them in 3 out of the 4 of my Spector's since I love the tone so much on them. When I first got my Rebop, I have planned on ripping everything out of it but it really surprised me how great the tone was on the bass stock. After a few months though, I did change everything out though since I wanted to have a trim pot tonepump and really liked the DC's.

Just to clarify, I don't mean gateway in the negative sense. I mean it opens the door to all of the wonderful potential that Spector brings. I love my Rebop! I just love my Euro a bit more.

I understood exactly what you meant......I found humor in it. I work in special ed and mental health so I often hear that marijuana is a "gateway" drug (that leads to other drugs, so one Spector begets another right?)........some people say they are Spector addicts........its funny in a twisted way......like I like my humor.....haha :hiding:

Here's a rough picture........according to the little bit I know the OBP-1 was stock in 2001-2002...so I guess its early. I did shoot an email to PJ to see what he can tell me....

I have several pictures of that bass if it is the one I'm thinking about? Do you want them?
