Well.....I'm new to Spector still and hope I offend no one with what follows.

If you have the money and you don't have to move a lot of valued,personally valued instruments then by all means experiment with what you want. However, if you don't like it, in the current economy its hard to move instruments and very few people have a spare 1000 versus five or six times that amount.

I can't see buying a Wal personally for the cost alone.....but if you have loads of cash and no other financial responsibilities.......go for it. I think you could get a few Spector at good used prices for the cost of a Wal. I went on a tone quest......hell I'm still on it......but I always found myself coming back to a certain brand.

Do what out gotta do man. Or don't do it. If I had enough to buy a Wal I think id buy a couple other bases and bank the rest though! LOL

Ya experimenting is fun.... I'm actually drawn to the cheaper spectors at the moment. They intrigue me. I forser a legend 4x in my future. I might even get a couple has pres for the legend and rex

I was just snapping some pics of my new rig (actually, I've had the Mesa Walkabout head for a while, but I took it out of the Scout 12 and ordered the 15 extensions cab and headcase). While I was at it, I figured it was a good excuse to take a pic with Spectors!

Sounds good to me and it looks like my Rebop sans the B string and the inlays.
I did not know they had a fully carved body.

Note: I just read they don't have a fully carved body.

Yeah, I am broke also. Guitar Center also has a used Korg DTR-2000 that I really want for dirt cheap but I am going to hold off on that also. Yes, I am addicted to buying tuners also and not just Spectors, LOL.

Dude. It says US shipping in the listing for a $1100 bass worth $2000. I can't even afford to split the shipping to Singapore.

I feel bad because it would be great to help someone out and get them into a Spector, but I really, truly could not afford to do this. So I politely said no and continue to wonder why this summer sucks so bad for trying to move stuff...

International shipping can be extremely expensive. Shipping to South Korea was about $600 via FedEx. You can't take the neck off a neck-thru. But yeah - it's insanely pricey.

Okay then. This may be easier to adjust than you think. The EMG BT circuit has 2 dip switches on either the treble or bass pot circuit board (it depends on how old it is, but you'll notice it right away). It gives you 4 different options on what you want the center frequency to be on the treble control. You can open the back and change it around until you find something that sounds closer to what you'd like. There is still going to be a difference between the frequency response on the 40DCs and the PJ combination. But unlike the Haz, you can choose what you want your treble frequency to be on the NS2A. My advice would be to mess with that and see if you can find a sweet spot you're happy with.

Click on "product data sheet" in the lower right corner of the page to get the .pdf and on the second page there are illustrations showing which dip switch configuration provides which treble frequency center point for the treble pot. This may help get things where you want them to be.

And just remember that there's no getting around the frequency differences between the 40DCs and the combination of the P & J. But being able to adjust your treble center point can only help.

I hope this helps and I apologize if I've just gone over a bunch of stuff you already knew. If you end up wanting to explore other pre-amp options for the NS-2A outside of a Haz, please PM me and we can talk about some potential options from EMG (and not just the smadder setup) for you that are pretty affordable. I'd be happy to help you out if I can.

This is really helpful info, as I've been curious about the EMG pre, but not fully satisfied how they sound. I'm thinking I could 'tune' the one in my JAR.

Yes, I called and talked to a girl that worked in guitars. She said it sold first thing this morning and she personally had fielded about 25 calls on that bass. I would have bought it for sure...........heck that was darn close to the going rate of the ns2a I am on the hunt for!

Love the Tone. I remember that "Clean Growl" that the OBP2 gives in the Forte. Even though I love the Haz... I loved that Tone also.

Moving Pictures was not a Wal. Hold Your Fire or Power Windows would be better examples. Personally, I would say Roll the Bones would be an even better Example.

One of my favorite Rush songs period is "Time Stand Still" and that was done with the Wal. At least it sounds like it and he's jumping around in the music video with it. LOL. Early green screen videos. Fun stuff.

As for that "tone"... I'll forever be chasing Sting's tone that I heard live in 1983 at the Synchronicity concert in the Omni in Atlanta... luckily for me the exact concert I attended was the one they filmed, so I've relived that night a 1000 times since.

And his tone in that concert was the "ideal" tone for what I'd love to have.

I've come into contact with enough Spectors now of both new and vintage manufacture that I've learned that from bass to bass, batch to batch (in the 70's and 80's Stuart and his then business partner and build assistant Alan would finish basses/guitars in 10-15 instrument batches), there's a major different sometimes in the tonal output.

It could be anything from the circuit (which is also made by hand) to the batch of early EMG pickups (before the chips and modern circuit tech was put in them) to the wood used for the wings and necks. So many variables. It's like chasing a dragon.

So for me... Sting's December 1983 Synchroncity concert tone and in guitar, Dave Gilmour's late 1980's red strat (the one with EMG pups and circuit) used on Momentary Lapse of Reason and Division Bell...

Those are the tones I'm always chasing.

And yes... on my mind to have built by Stuart would be a Fiesta Red Webcaster with the EMG Gilmour DG20 set of electronics... basically a Spectorized version of Dave's famous late 1980's early 1990's red guitar.

So earlier "vintage" EMG pickups may have sounded warmer and growlier like the sting bass? I love that tone but didn;t really care for the EMGs in my Euro and I was wondering what was so different

I honestly wasn't that excited by post-Roger Waters Pink Floyd albums, but that guitar tone was so great! It is why I put together my own Strat type guitar.
