I've only had one problem with Dunlops in 14yrs (with the same set). One of the ball bearings fell out of the strap side and it kept popping out. Once I realized what had happened I replaced them and all is good. I spoke with PJ about sending him a set of Dunlops for my new NS-2 (hopefully done soon!) and he said they were switching to the Dunlop dual design as standard. This was back in Feb so I'm not sure if they've changed their mind on that. I prefer the dual design because you can use any strap if you're in a pinch...

Although Dunlops have their fans, it would seem that the discussions here indicate that the majority of Spector players prefer the Schallers by a wide margin.
I would certainly hope PJ, Stuart and company would see these discussions and reconsider that decision.

Plus, if the Dunlop flush mount (I haven't seen one up close) involves counter-sinking into the wood so as to prevent me from switching to Schallers (especially as Dunlops are standard on a Forte that doesn't allow optional changes), that would be a deal breaker for me.

In with new arsenal picture. Nothing special.... just 3 black Spectors Two Euros and one NS-2 #1446 in the middle. I wonder if it's possible to calculate the year of production by number.

They wouldn't be flush mount if they are the dual design because it would kill the opportunity to use a regular strap. I only asked PJ about it because I wanted to send him a set of Dunlops to save me from switching out the Schallers when I got the bass. Website still says Schallers, so who knows. Maybe they were just considering it.

I'd say that the reason for the switch is because of popular demand. That's usually the reason Stuart & PJ make changes.

Beautiful basses Anton! To calculate the year of the bass you add a 1 to the front number, for example yours is 1446, add a 1 to the 1 on the front 1+1=2, 2446, so it's most likely a 2002. Make sense? LimaGuy or jps I believe had gotten this formula from PJ.

You know when it comes to certain things there are people out there that have spent years figuring stuff out.

Like Phat with all the Euro-model stuff.

Todd Cooke is the expert on Nikki Sixx's basses. He's talked with Nikki directly and he owns one or two... not sure of the number.

I do know that if any of you are big fans of the "Spector-Birds", Todd is one of the big reasons that they were re-introduced via the Forte-X, NS-2X/NS-4X and Legend-X models.

He's been hunting the originals for years.

Todd informed me that three skull and bones basses were made.

The first one has only a single volume knob. And it belongs to Nikki. And he doesn't want to part with it... unless you're willing to mortgage your house to buy it.

The next two were special orders for the Kramer Japanese Distributor at the time (late 1980's) and the guitar in the photo above is one of those two.

The two that went to Japan (never to be seen again) have the USA 9v Circuit in them.

So these are copies of Nikki's bass from the shape and paint-job aspect but not from the actual electronics side of things.

I would imagine that since Nikki's bass only has one knob and that knob is a volume control, that his bass is passive and has no tone circuit or control whatsoever.

That's awesome. Todd and Nikki Rule! Wish he still played Spectors, those basses during the Girls, Girls Girls and Dr. Feelgood era were just the coolest!

Couldn't you use the Shallers with a regular strap in a pinch as well? Seems to me you could. I hope my new NS-2 comes with Schallers, if not I will put them on immediately.

Side note: I'm going to sell my USA Forte 5...I've been SOCKED unexpectedly by 2 vehicle repairs at the same time! :scowl:
I've been out of work for 4 months now for medical reasons, and waiting for my retirement to kick in anytime now but nobody in my HR knows when it will for sure. I really hate to sell the Forte 5 but we need $$$! I give the special Spector club family discount just PM me. I'll be putting it on the TB classified later today. I'd rate the condition of the Forte 9 of 10 due to the two shiny spots where my thumb rubs at the top pup and where my arm rests on the body edge. I've had the Forte 5 since March 2012, has OBP 3 preamp, EMG 40P5/40J pups, strung with RotoSounds 77 Jazz Bass Flats. I'll even throw in a set of Power Slinkies slightly used. Shoot me a PM if you're interested.

I'm in, here's the Rebop 5 I picked up from Jamie this weekend and my 86 NS-2. Had a great visit with Jamie (brotherbassj) this weekend, enjoyed playing with all the different basses. Although we forgot to plug in the Matte Forte I was wanting to hear. Look forward to hanging out again and catching one of his shows. The Rebop is getting ready to get stripped down, defretted, and finished with a nice oil stain.

I have that exact same plan for a rebop. I'm curious on how the oil will look. . I am hoping to get a US Brass bridge for it too.

Thanks Ice but this formula works for Euros I believe, because my NS-2 is from Kramer era and it obviously could not be made in 2002, I think it's around 1983-84. I'll pm Todd, he knows this for sure
