I have a Spector on order thru The Guitar House right now and I can honestly say it has been a fantastic experience! Not only did I get a great deal on a custom bass, but Todd has been a great guy to deal with and is a fountain of Spector knowledge!!

I'm sure sure if they get get around to naming this particular configuration, they'll probably go with that.

So for Lee's and my benefit, Sam found Chris' soundclips of the NS4 with different pickups...
Here they are...
I did a comparison recording of my NS-4 with the 35P and 35J pickups and the DC pickups.
Specs: Recorded with my USA NS-4 directly into Protools.
Fairly new Rotosound swing bass 66's on the bass (A little buzzy on the low string).
Volume all the way up, blend in the middle, EQ set flat on the 18 volt Haz.
Tuned to drop D.
Each recording is the same with 3 parts:
Fingers (Rage Against the Machine - Freedom Riff)
Slapping (a little riff I wrote)
Pick (Verse from The Pot- Tool)
Here is with the 35P in the front, 35J in the back.

I would think of a well used 80's Fender or the like as a beater!!! Caling one of Nino's basses a "beater" is too funny! I don't own one but he seems like a great guy. I've heard nothing but positives anout them too.
Someone said Sadowsky is overpriced. I own 2 and can say that just like Spector, great quality, a sound uniquely their own and wonderful people to deal with. Handbuilt in NYC by top notch craftsmen, you get what you pay for. Look, everyone can't afford the cost of a US handbuilt bass like Sadowsky, Spector, Lull, Alleva Copolla, etc. However, there is a real "cost" to pay skilled American craftsmen and workers to handbuild custom instruments with the finest materials and parts. Perhaps that value equation doesn't work for everyone that could even afford it, but I think the term "overpriced" is the wrong term to use. My decision to buy a Sadowsky NYC and Spector Woodstock not only got me the basses I want, but supports small businesses in the US that still manufacture in the US and pay living wages to skilled American workers. I feel the same way about buying from Mesa Boogie, which I've heard some people call overpriced as well.

The difference between Spector and others like Sadowsky is that Stuart et al cut the wood and shape it themselves. Sadowsky and others assemble from pre cut bodies and necks. I can do that myself for a fraction of the price. Not against any of those, just don't see spending a couple grand on something that I can do myself...

Good comparisons - thanks for posting.
I did a similar comparison (without recording it) on my NS-5XL with the same preamp (18v Haz) and pickup configs. Only difference being I didn't do any slap and focused more on pick playing. In that case, I actually preferred the dual DC's the most for the fullness especially with the low B. I did like the Neck P5-Bridge DC combo too.
However, with Chris' playing and technique on the clips, the P/J definitely sounds the best to me for both fingers and slap. On the clips I still prefer the dual DC's the most for the pick sound again because it sounds fuller to me but still has some of the Spector grind. I think I also tend to dig in more with a pick so I get a little more grind out of it.
I still want to hear a set of the 40P5 and J pickups with a 9v Haz specifically for the low B.
