nope I haven't.... I'm a solid state guy. I don't need to push the tubes for grind. My TP settings get me what I need. I think it might be too much with a tube head. But I will be on the lookout to try one now :)

In the guitar world I have always been underwhelmed with Orange. In the bass world I just never see them around. I am a GK player... I love their tone, reliability and price point.

I would advise against that Donny. You, you're band, those stacks you're up against equals 800 all the way. Don't worry about the tone of it at low volumes. Unlike the 700, 1001 and 800RB....the MB800 sounds joooost fine at low volumes IMO.

that's what I was looking for... thanks Lee... I've got no problems with those stacks :) I don't know why everyone doesn't play Spectors, they always cut thru if you want them too

For you amp aficianados, I see the 800 is listed as 800w into 4 ohm. I have two Eden cabs that are both listed as 700 watts at 4 ohms. So would the 800 be too much for one of them? It sounds like with the 800 head I've be better off with two 8 ohm cabs. This stuff always confuses me!

Is it really that good? have you tried the Aguilar Tone Hammer 500? I have not. When I have my transplant in the spring I am going to be stuck in a little apartment for 3 months with nothing to do, except play a bunch of bass. I was thinking of selling my SVT :crying: and getting maybe one of the little amps, one of the GK's or the Aguilar with maybe a little 1-12. I would like it to be something I can travel easily with, and also use with the band next summer when I am healed and done with this crap once and for all:hyper::hyper:.

What's my best bet that will sound great at low volumes and can keep up in a band setting?

Youre fine with that, I'm running 2000 watts bridged 4ohm's into my Mesa 4/12 rated at 1200 watts.

Crown XTI2000 with the Jule Monique pre. The DSP on the Crown is awsome for adding a limiter, and low pass filter if needed. I am trying to find settings others are using with this power amp to try out.

Personally I like to have more than the rated watts than less.

Hey Chris,

As the caretaker of a '73 SVT I certainly hope you do not have to sell it. To answer your question, yes, I think the MB800 is that good but for your scenario I would honestly think about trying the diminutive MB200 and here's why:

1. It is ridiculously loud at 200W (4 ohms)
2. Headphone jack
3. Aux in feature
4. Price (you can get them on here for $150-175)
5. Good ole GK tone

I don't know if you've played GK or not but being an SVT guy it will sound a tad different. I like both tones (GK and Ampeg) each for what they are. Also, being a SS amp you can just use it as a headphone monitor and it doesn't need to be hooked up to a speaker. I realize you probably know all this but just saying in case you don't.

The MB500/800 doesn't have an aux in for playing along with tunes but it does have a headphone jack.

You want me to send you my MB200 to see if you like it?

ps. You may also want to check out TC's BH250. That looks like a fun micro with the toneprint feature. That'd be fun to mess around zapping those toneprints from your phone to the head.

i just went through the same dilemma. i watched lots of vids on both and i physically remember the tone that gk had. i couldnt quit playing it in guitar center. then i went to the ampeg svt4 pro and 8x10, played for 30 seconds, turned it off, when back to the gk and played it some more. just awesome tone :) hope it helps

Should be just fine.

With solid state amps, I like them to be rated a good bit more than the cabs. Headroom sounds good to me.

Yes it does. And it really is just about as much (I got mine for less just waiting and watching Amazon) or less than the 500. I find that between the master and pre control for each channel, I can create enough "push-and-pull" so it sounds like a smaller solid state head working harder, or I can open it up and make a crater.
