OK. I have a little quandry. Since the correct tuners are nearly unobtanium for my Euro4 I'm putting back together,which way do you guys think I should go. I have a black Schaller M4 set that would require a different screw hole. Not too big of an issue since I'm refinishing the whole thing. Or I could drill out the headstock and use a set of black Gotohs I have. They are a little different with an H as the only marking on the back of the seal.

I think I'd rather go with the Schallers, but what do you guys think?

I'd email PJ and ask him. Then he will say buy M4 2000 (bracket 90) tuners. Hopefully he will know where to buy them. I sure a fine company like Spector knows how to find replacement tuners.

I know the photo on the website looks a little wonky but click on the "buttons" tab.

I prefer schallers and making new holes in a bass is nerve-racking.

I actually prefer them. They have a 20:1 turn ratio and allow for more precise tuning adjustments.

The peg holes may need to be widened some. The shaft of Gotohs is traditionally larger than Schallers.

I'm seriously considering putting a set of Gotoh sealed 510 Tuners (22:1 ratio) to replace the black Schallers on my NS-2A. They're 1/2 the cost of the replacement gold Schallers:

I actually have a set of these that I picked up for another project and decided against changing the existing ones.

I think they are very similiar to the Gotohs that you pointed out. Instead of having the Gotoh logo on back they have a "H". Different shape on the "ears" too. They do have the screw mount in the proper position. I would have to open up the peg holes just as you said.

Unfortunately there are some things that annoyed me.

The finish in some places has specks of black paint in it, which I find very frustrating to look at.

When I took the trussrod cover off, I found that there was what seemed to be baby powder n the cavity, and a decently sized chipout of the finish.

The sound more than makes up for those things though, and I am intending to buy an upper quality bass soon.

Been out of the loop and of the forum a bit. Lot of family stuff. But anyway I saw this post and I just had to add my 2 cents. I have played bass off and on for about 24 years. I always remember hearing my first Spector at an upscale guitar shop, I was hooked. But as a young kid, the price at the time was well out of reach and unrealistic for a kid just playing with some friends at parties. Anyway, fast forward to last year. I had an on duty career ending injury. Needed to do something between treatments, therapies and surgeries. So I picked up the bass again. Found a fellow TBr selling his ReBop4. At the right time and a couple towns over, perfect. From the second I plugged it in, it was just delicious. I couldn't get enough. So I wanted my next one to be a USA x body. Didn't know if it would be an NS2 or a Forte. But plan on ordering it in the spring (tax return). Anyway, I saw a legend for sale on E-bay. It was upgraded to EMGX PJ set up with a BQC preamp. I put in a very low bid and ended up winning it. When it arrived, I was blown away at the construction, curves body and similar bridge setup to my Euro ReBop. Then the EMGX with the BQC can dial on just about any tone. The neck is thinner and faster, but does not sustain as well. To make this long story short, I honestly don't think you can buy a bad Spector, unless someone previous to you abused it and destroyed it, but any new or new used(especially if you buy from the guys on this site) i don't think you can ever go wrong. They are just incredible instruments to fit all styles of playing and sound. I will say loud and proud, I have a Legend and a ReBop. Both will have a wonderful home for years to come.

The Gotoh H models are nice. They're sealed. The key shape is a little different, but Stuart has used them before on a few Spectors.

Wow Supes! Nostalgia time again! I owned a forum IV and swapped out the Spector pickups for the EMGs. That was my main bass from age 17 - 23-4ish. I remember looking at the catalog my local retailer at the time gave me and I wanted the NS-2A in white so very badly but only had $600 and it had taken me a year to save up that much just bussing tables. I needed an active, more powerful tone with two guitarists an drummer and a singer/keyboard player (this was long before IEM systems) and my baby blue B.C. Rich (it was the 80s damnit! Not my fault!) despite having an incredibly comfortable neck and great sounding passive pickups, body wood, hardware, etc, I wanted a Kramer more than anything else because they made Spectors and I worshiped those, so I figured anything that got me close would be good. And no, it was no where near close, but it was a great bass that lasted a long time and had excellent build quality. I can understand why Stuart trusted them - even their import stuff was top notch. I remember seeing an old spec sheet catalog publication a few months ago that was in a stack of old magazines and I remember how badly I wanted the Forum I because of the cooler inlays, real EMGs and an active preamp. and the neck through construction. Alas, bussing tables at Bennigans didn't get me past the IV. And that was as close as I ever got to owning a Spector for years. But I could almost swear that they were using EMG BT preamps in the higher end forum series. As fallible as I am, I may have remembered that wrong, but I'm pretty sure the Forum 1 & 2 had an EMG active pre and EMGs while the III and IV had Spector Pickups with vol/vol/tone/tone; a fully passive layout.

Now you've got me wanting to cruise eBay again for one of the old catalogs again. :hiding:

Hi Spector crowd. I am interested in buying a spector bass and would love to hear your recommendations. Here is what i am looking for:

- 4 Strings
- that reverse PJ combination
- the curved body
- neck through would be nice

I am looking for a good value for money rating. As much as i would love to, i cannot afford a NS-2. I live in germany if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance.

In terms of finish i am quite open. I love browsing this thread because most if not all spectors really look amazing. The one i like best is the flat black seethrough one.

Sounds like a Spector Euro LX would suit you nicely.
It has the same EMG P/J pickups as the USA basses, neck-thru construction, and the Tonepump preamp sounds very close to the USA models. It comes in your flat black finish, and can be had for less than 1/2 the cost of a USA NS-2. I own both USA and Euro Spectors, and the Euro more than holds its own when compared to the USA models. IMHO, the Spector Euro offers more value for the money than any other bass available, regardless of cost or brand.
